Large negative thermal expansion in GdFe(CN)6 driven by unusual low-frequency modes

Qilong Gao et al.

Summary: Understanding the NTE mechanism is crucial. This study investigates the NTE mechanism of GdFe(CN)6 and finds that it is caused by the tension effect induced by transverse vibrations of the atomic -Fe-C equivalent to N-Gd- linkages, with N atoms making the largest contribution. Lattice dynamics calculations reveal that low-frequency optical modes at around 50 cm-1 have the largest negative Gruneisen parameters and contribute the most to the NTE. These unusual low-frequency vibrational modes are attributed to the presence of GdN6 trigonal prisms in the framework structure of GdFe(CN)6.

A new isotropic negative thermal expansion material of CaSnF6 with facile and low-cost synthesis

Qilong Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, a new negative thermal expansion (NTE) material, CaSnF6, was synthesized by solvothermal method for the first time. The XRD and Raman spectroscopy results showed a phase transition from rhombohedral to cubic structure at about 200 K, accompanied by a significant isotropic NTE effect in the cubic phase. Lattice dynamics calculations revealed that the NTE is attributed to the transverse vibration of fluorine atoms excited by low-frequency phonons. This work not only expands the NTE family of fluorides, but also provides a new facile and low-cost fabrication method for NTE fluorides.

Significant Zero Thermal Expansion Via Enhanced Magnetoelastic Coupling in Kagome Magnets

Jiawang Xu et al.

Summary: High-performance zero-thermal-expansion (ZTE) alloy is discovered in Hf0.85Ta0.15Fe2C0.01 magnet, with a negligible coefficient of thermal expansion a(v) as small as 2.4 ppm K-1 in a broad temperature range of 85-245 K. The addition of interstitial atom C into Ta-substituted Hf0.85Ta0.15Fe2 effectively tunes the normal positive thermal expansion into ZTE via enhanced magnetoelastic coupling.

Chemical Diversity for Tailoring Negative Thermal Expansion

Qiang Li et al.

Summary: Negative thermal expansion (NTE) has been a prominent topic in solid-state chemistry and functional materials, and the response of a lattice to temperature is closely related to its structural features and physical properties. In recent years, significant progress has been made in the study of NTE compounds, but the intelligent design of NTE structures and efficient control of lattice thermal expansion remain challenging. Nevertheless, the diverse chemical synthesis routes offer numerous strategies for achieving desirable NTE behaviors and related properties.

Lightweight and near-zero thermal expansion ZrW2O8-SiCnw/Al hybrid composites

Chang Zhou et al.

Summary: Hybrid Al matrix composites reinforced with ZrW2O8 and SiC reinforcements were fabricated and the effect of SiC content on microstructure, phase composition, thermal expansion, and mechanical properties was investigated. The results showed that composites with a certain SiC content exhibited the best bending strength and near-zero thermal expansion.

Atomic structure evolution related to the Invar effect in Fe-based bulk metallic glasses

Alexander Firlus et al.

Summary: The Invar effect in Fe-based bulk metallic glasses is widely observed, but its manifestation at the atomic scale is not well understood. In this study, in-situ X-ray diffraction was used to investigate the structural transformations of two bulk metallic glasses, revealing that the Invar effect is consistent with macroscopic thermal expansion and correlated with Fe-Fe pair distance.

Machine learning-enabled high-entropy alloy discovery

Ziyuan Rao et al.

Summary: This study proposes an active learning strategy to accelerate the design of high-entropy Invar alloys. By integrating machine learning with density-functional theory, thermodynamic calculations, and experiments, the researchers successfully identified high-entropy Invar alloys with extremely low thermal expansion coefficients. This approach shows promise for the fast and automated discovery of high-entropy alloys with optimal thermal, magnetic, and electrical properties.

Negative thermal expansion in framework structure materials

Naike Shi et al.

Summary: Negative thermal expansion (NTE) is a counterintuitive phenomenon where unit cell volume of materials contracts upon heating. Framework structure materials, with flexible bridging units and large voids, facilitate transverse atomic vibrations leading to NTE. The magnitude of NTE is influenced by framework size and metal atom size, and can be controlled through chemical substitution, local structure distortion, and guest molecular or ion intercalation.

Negative thermal expansion in magnetic materials

Yuzhu Song et al.

Summary: The review summarizes the progress in magnetic NTE materials from Invar alloys to newly discovered materials like Mn-based antiperovskites, Laves phases, La(Fe, Si)13, Mn3Ge, R2Fe17, R(Fe,V)12, and R2Fe14B (R = rare earth elements). The NTE properties of magnetic materials can be controlled by adjusting magnetic exchange interaction through methods like chemical substitution, nanocrystallization, external field, and interstitial atoms. The main mechanisms of NTE of magnetic materials, including order-to-disorder transition, change of local moment, metamagnetic transition, short-range magnetic ordering, structural phase transition, and coexistence of magnetic phases, are summarized.
