Modeling the dependence of capillary sorptivity on initial water content for cement-based materials in view of water sensitivity

Fangzhou Ren et al.

Summary: This paragraph discusses the relationship between capillary sorptivity and initial water content in cement-based materials. Existing models fail to accurately quantify unsaturated sorptivity, but a new model based on the water sensitivity of C-S-H gels is proposed and successfully validated with experimental data.

Time-dependent retardation effect of epoxy latexes on cement hydration: Experiments and multi-component hydration model

Pengfei Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the kinetics and thermodynamics of the retardation effect of epoxy latexes on cement hydration using isothermal calorimetry and in-situ x-ray diffraction. The findings showed that epoxy latexes delayed cement hydration and this retardation effect was time-dependent.

Performance of FPT, FTIR and DSC methods in cure monitoring of epoxy resins

Katarzyna Sawicz-Kryniger et al.

Summary: The study investigated the addition polymerization of epoxy resins using Fluorescence Probe Technique (FPT), Fourier-Transform InfraRed spectroscopy (FTIR) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) methods. Results showed that FPT provided reliable real-time monitoring of reaction kinetics and correlated well with FTIR and DSC measurements. The activation energies determined by FPT were consistent with those obtained by DSC and reported in literature, making FPT a promising alternative for kinetic studies of chemical reactions.

Ultraductile waterborne epoxy-concrete composite repair material: Epoxy-fiber synergistic effect on flexural and tensile performance

Bo Pang et al.

Summary: With the extension of service time, the deterioration of infrastructure in safety and durability has become an urgent issue, requiring repair and reinforcement. This paper focuses on the development of a novel waterborne epoxy-concrete composite repair material (WECM) that improves the brittleness and ductility of concrete. The results demonstrate the synergistic effect of fiber and waterborne epoxy on the performance enhancement of concrete.

The interpenetration polymer network in a cement paste-waterborne epoxy system

Bo Pang et al.

Summary: A mesoscale model based on the Flory-Huggins interaction theory was developed to visualize the IPN structure in the cement-polymer system and was validated through experiments. The model successfully predicted the IPN structures of WECM by rule and line concerning DP, w/c, and p/c in the mixture. The study demonstrates the potential of using Flory-Huggins theory in cement-based composites for performance prediction and microstructure design.

Quantifying the anomalous water absorption behavior of cement mortar in view of its physical sensitivity to water

Fangzhou Ren et al.

Summary: This study proposes a modified Richards equation to quantify anomalous water absorption into cement-based materials, taking into account the water sensitivity of C-S-H gels and time-decaying water permeability. Consistent experimental tests and calculations show that the modified Richards equation can quantitatively capture long-term absorption with two linear stages and a nonlinear transition stage between them.

Optimal preparation and degradation characterization of repair mortar containing waterborne epoxy resin emulsions

Qiang Xia et al.

Summary: An orthogonal experimental investigation was conducted to optimize preparation parameters of repair mortar containing waterborne epoxy resin and evaluate its degradation performances under different ageing conditions: water immersion, thermal ageing, and hydro-thermal ageing. The study found that water-cement ratio and polymer-cement ratio significantly influenced the mechanical properties of the mortar, and an optimal combination was achieved with a 5% dosage of coalescing agent. Changes in residual coefficients were reversible under water immersion but almost irreversible under thermal ageing, with more complications observed under hydro-thermal ageing. Raman spectroscopy was used to characterize phase changes and chemistry evolution during ageing tests.

Xijun Zhang et al.

Summary: Polymer-modified cement mortar (PMCM) composite materials have excellent capabilities such as crack resistance, impermeability, and durability compared to ordinary cement mortar (OCM) due to the addition of polymers. The versatility of PMCM in applications is enhanced by varying polymer types and concentrations in the composition. Further research is needed to explore the prospects and address the challenges of PMCM composite materials.

Investigation of the effect of waterborne epoxy resins on the hydration kinetics and performance of cement blends

Yue Li et al.

Summary: The hydration process and products of waterborne epoxy resin (WER)-modified cement were studied to determine their influence on pore structure and mechanical properties. Results showed that WER content and curing temperature had significant effects on the hydration behavior and product evolution of cement paste. The study also revealed that the retardation effect of WER during cement hydration was related to prolonged interactions at phase boundaries, affecting the microstructure and mechanical properties of cement mortar.
