A Review on Lignin-Based Phenolic Resin Adhesive

Xiaoyu Gong et al.

Summary: It is increasingly important to replace petroleum-based chemicals with biomass-based alternatives for the development of a low-carbon economy. The use of biobased lignin as a partial replacement for phenol in phenolic resin adhesives used in the wood panels industry can significantly reduce carbon emissions and negative environmental impact. However, the limitations of lignin's structure and activity hinder its application as an adhesive, and researchers have developed various modification methods to overcome these issues.

Densification of timber: a review on the process, material properties, and application

John Paul Cabral et al.

Summary: Timber densification is a process that enhances the structural properties of timber by altering its cellular structure through compression, chemical impregnation, or a combination of both. The density and mechanical properties of the timber can be modified by adjusting parameters such as compression ratio and temperature. The current processes, effects, and potential future directions of timber densification are discussed in this paper.

Effects of Pressurized Superheated Steam Treatment on Dimensional Stability and Its Mechanisms in Surface-Compressed Wood

Zhiqiang Gao et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the dimensional stability, surface wettability, chemical structure, cellulose crystalline structure, and microstructure of surface-compressed wood. The results showed that pressurized superheated steam treatment effectively reduced the equilibrium moisture content, thickness swelling ratio, and wettability of the wood, while increasing the crystallinity and crystal width of cellulose, leading to enhanced dimensional stability. The findings suggest that pressurized steam treatment has potential for improving the shape stability of surface-compressed wood, making it more suitable for use in the building and construction industries.

An investigation of thermal conductivity and sound absorption from binderless panels made of oil palm wood as bio-insulation materials

Indra Mawardi et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the thermal and sound characteristics of binderless panels made from oil palm wood as insulation materials. The results show that particle size has a significant impact on the characteristics of the binderless panels, while pressing times do not. Panels with larger particles have better thermal and sound resistance but lower density, water resistance, and flexural strength.

The influence of thickness and final heat treatment on mechanical properties and dimensional stability of binderless fiberboards from steam exploded Arundo donax L

Federica Vitrone et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of thickness and final heat treatment on the physico-mechanical properties of binderless fiberboards made from Arundo donax L. The results show that the final heat treatment greatly influences dimensional stability but does not improve mechanical performance. On the contrary, thickness does not affect thickness swelling and water absorption, but has a small effect on modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, and internal bond.

Summary: This paper reviews the influence of cell wall moisture content during thermal modification process on the properties of thermally modified timber (TMT). It compares TMT modified under dry and wet conditions, analyzing the role of hydroxyl groups, cell wall polymer mobility, and crosslinking in sorption behavior. The study also raises questions regarding the role of OH groups in sorption behavior based on the changes observed in TMT after water leaching post-treatment.

Influence of steam explosion pre-treatment conditions on binder-less boards from hemp shives and wheat straw

Ramunas Tupciauskas et al.

Summary: Non-catalysed steam explosion pre-treatment was used to valorise agricultural residues of hemp shives and wheat straw, producing fibre bundles with self-bonding property. The SE severity significantly influenced particle size and cellulose DP, while SE temperature and time both played a significant role in improving the properties of the binder-less boards, particularly enhancing water absorption and internal bonding strength. Hemp varieties exhibited differences in the properties of the binder-less boards, with Uso31 being the most suitable variety.
