Tradeoffs between soil conservation and soil-water retention: The role of vegetation pattern and density

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: The intensive revegetation experiment in the water-limited conditions of the Chinese Loess Plateau revealed that the combination of vegetation pattern and density plays a crucial role in determining the tradeoff between soil conservation and water retention. Adjusting vegetation structure and density can optimize this tradeoff.

Effects of litter mass on throughfall partitioning in a Pinus tabulaeformis plantation on the Loess Plateau, China

Yongsheng Cui et al.

Summary: Litter accumulation is a result of afforestation, and its effects on rainfall reallocation processes are not well understood. This study examined the ecohydrological functions of litter through field experiments. The results showed that litter could decrease evaporation, reduce surface runoff, and increase soil water storage. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the impact of litter on hydrological processes and provide theoretical references for plantation management.

Evaporation, infiltration and storage of soil water in different vegetation zones in the Qilian Mountains: a stable isotope perspective

Guofeng Zhu et al.

Summary: This study monitored the soil water movement in different vegetation zones of the Xiying River basin, and found that the evaporation signals of mountain grassland and deciduous forest could penetrate deep into the soil, while alpine meadow and coniferous forest only had evaporation from the topsoil. Additionally, the water storage capacity in each vegetation zone varied, with the alpine meadow having the largest capacity.

Infiltration process of irrigation water in oasis farmland and its enlightenment to optimization of irrigation mode: Based on stable isotope data

Guofeng Zhu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the temporal and spatial changes of stable isotopes of soil water in Minqin Oasis farmland to understand the infiltration process of irrigation water. The results showed the contribution rate and effective contribution time of irrigation water to different soil layers, providing scientific basis for improving agricultural irrigation mode and promoting the sustainable development of regional agriculture.

Effects of plastic mulch on soil water migration in arid oasis farmland: Evidence of stable isotopes

Guofeng Zhu et al.

Summary: This research monitored and analyzed the hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopic composition of soil water in agricultural lands in arid oases, confirming the positive impact of plastic film mulching on reducing evaporation losses of surface soil water and improving water use efficiency throughout the corn growing season. The findings provide valuable insights for understanding hydrological processes, enhancing agricultural irrigation water utilization rates, and optimizing water conservation models in arid areas.

Long-term ecological effects of two artificial forests on soil properties and quality in the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Yuejun He et al.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term ecological effects of a 30-year-old typical planted forest on the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau on soil, finding that soil nutrient content was higher than pre-afforestation baseline values but soil quality index was low. LiDAR satellite imagery was used to estimate growing stock in different plantations, showing that different stand forests had discrete effects on the soil environment.
