Downward migration of salts in termite-affected soils: Implications for groundwater salinization

C. E. Clarke et al.

Summary: The Buffels River catchment in South Africa is affected by saline groundwater. This study investigated the role of termite mounds (heuweltjies) in transferring salts. Results showed elevated soluble ion concentrations in the mounds, suggesting a marine-aerosol origin of the salts. The presence of gypsum and calcite indicated a surface source of salinity. Faunal burrows and soil porosity facilitated the transport of salts to greater depths.

Insects as zoogeomorphic agents: an extended review

Francois Betard

Summary: Insects play a critical role as agents of geomorphic change, with social insects like ants and termites receiving more attention. This article provides an extended and critical literature review of insects as geomorphic agents, discussing their impacts on Earth surface systems and evolutionary insights based on fossil evidence.

Impacts of fungus-growing termites on surficial geology parameters: A review

John Van Thuyne et al.

Summary: The review discusses the impacts of fungus-growing termites on savanna sediments and landscapes over a 25-year period, highlighting their role in transforming geological formations, optimizing living conditions for fungi, and increasing alkalinity and carbon mineralization. Termite activities alter soil properties, enhance weathering resistance, and contribute to landscape resilience, with long-lasting effects on the environment and potential as proxies for paleoenvironmental reconstructions.

Are fungus-growing termites super sediment-sorting insects of subtropical environments?

John Van Thuyne et al.

Summary: Fungus-growing termites are able to modify sediment sorting by selecting, transporting, and mixing various grain sizes in order to build mounds with the necessary texture for stability and mechanical properties, regardless of the parent material. This sorting process must be taken into consideration when reconstructing paleoenvironment based on particle-size distributions.

Ants as geomorphological agents: A global assessment

Heather A. Viles et al.

Summary: Ants are abundant and play important roles in geomorphological processes worldwide. They construct mounds and subterranean galleries, affect vegetation cover and soil properties, and influence runoff and erosion. Their activities have a significant impact on soil infiltration rates, sediment provision, and vegetation cover.
