A novel remote sensing monitoring index of salinization based on three-dimensional feature space model and its application in the Yellow River Delta of China

Bing Guo et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the evolution of soil salinization in the Yellow River Delta from 1984 to 2022 using a three-dimensional feature space method. The results showed that the salinization intensity in the delta increased from the inland southwest to the coastal northeast. The implementation of salinization control measures has exacerbated salinization, particularly in the northeast. However, some cultivated land in the southwest has shown improvement in salinization.

Summary: This study explored the spatial and temporal evolution patterns of vegetation NDVI in the Yellow River Basin of China from 1989 to 2019. The research found that the dominant factors influencing vegetation NDVI shifted from natural factors to human activities during the study period. The results could provide decision support for the protection and restoration of vegetation ecosystem in the Yellow River Basin.

Desertification risk assessment in Northeast Brazil: Current trends and future scenarios

Rita Marcia D. S. P. Vieira et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the desertification susceptibility in Northeast Brazil using various data and modeling techniques. The results indicated that in the coming decades, areas with moderate susceptibility will decrease while high susceptibility areas will increase. Land management was identified as the main driver of desertification susceptibility, highlighting the need for sustainable land use policies in the region.

Plant community composition and structure under short-term grazing exclusion in steppic arid rangelands

Yacine Kouba et al.

Summary: In arid steppes, short-term grazing exclusion during severe drought conditions leads to the appearance of increasers, colonizers, and native indicator plant species. It also increases the size of the regional species pool and improves both incidence-based and abundance-based alpha-diversity. Additionally, grazing exclusion decreases abundance-based beta-diversity at local scale but increases it at landscape scale, while incidence-based beta-diversity significantly decreases at landscape scale.

Driving factors of desertification in Qaidam Basin, China: An 18-year analysis using the geographic detector model

Jinjun Han et al.

Summary: The Qaidam Basin in China is rich in salt mineral resources, but desertification has severely impacted residents' lives and economic development. Through a comprehensive analysis of desertification and its driving factors using geographical detector model and GIS, it was found that regions with abundant water resources had low desertification while areas with high evaporation in the central and western Qaidam Basin experienced high levels of desertification. Evaporation was identified as the most significant factor contributing to desertification, followed by precipitation, vegetation type, soil type, and temperature.

Monitoring land sensitivity to desertification using the ESAI approach and evaluation of the key indicators: A spatio-temporal study in India

Joy Rajbanshi et al.

Summary: Desertification in India has spread from the west to the south, causing severe degradation in states like Rajasthan and Ladakh. The random forest model identifies drought resistance and erosion protection as the most important drivers of this phenomenon. Without immediate action, irreversible losses may occur on 33.76% of the country's land.

Summary: The aeolian desertified land area in Zhenglan Banner has been decreasing over the past 20 years, with a rebound from 2004 to 2010. The areas of slightly, moderately, and severely desertified land have all been decreasing at different annual rates. Human activities have had significant positive and negative impacts on the aeolian desertification trend in the study area.

Exploring the multiple land degradation pathways across the planet

Remus Pravalie

Summary: This review paper explores global land degradation through an interdisciplinary and holistic approach, identifying 17 different pathways of land degradation. Among them, five major pathways are considered crucial, eroding ecosystem functions and services. The study emphasizes the urgent need for multidimensional research on land degradation and advocates for prioritizing it in governmental and international policies.

Geospatial analysis of desertification vulnerability using Mediterranean desertification and land use (MEDALUS) model in Kebbi State, Nigeria

Muhammad Mansur Aliero et al.

Summary: This study assessed desertification vulnerability in Kebbi State, Nigeria, using the Mediterranean desertification and land use-environmental sensitivity area index approach. The results indicated that the area is moderately sensitive to desertification. The approach based on biophysical and human indicators is useful for determining desertification severity and selecting priority zones for combating this phenomenon effectively.
