Mapping snow density through thermal inertia observations

Roberto Colombo et al.

Summary: In this study, an innovative method is proposed to estimate the thermal inertia and density of snow at a catchment scale by combining meteorological parameters, satellite data, and field snow measurements. The results demonstrate the possibility of mapping snow density from optical and thermal observations from space.

Development of a fine-resolution snow depth product based on the snow cover probability for the Tibetan Plateau: Validation and spatial-temporal analyses

Dajiang Yan et al.

Summary: Accurate remotely sensed snow depth data are crucial for monitoring and modeling hydrological processes in cold regions. By developing a spatial-temporal downscaling method to improve the spatial resolution of passive microwave snow depth data for the Tibetan Plateau, this study enhances our understanding of the spatial-temporal variations in snow depth and the hydrological processes in the region.

Steven J. Cooper et al.

Summary: The HiLaMS campaign explored snowfall properties and processes in Norway and Sweden, using a low-cost instrumentation suite to develop retrieval schemes and identify biases in numerical weather prediction models. The results suggest value in deploying enhanced snow observing instruments to new high-latitude locations.

Summary: This study implemented and evaluated a new multi-layer snow scheme in ERA5-Land to improve the representation of soil temperature in permafrost regions. The revised snow scheme significantly improved the soil temperature representation and the modeled permafrost extent was in good agreement with observations.

A Time Series of Snow Density and Snow Water Equivalent Observations Derived From the Integration of GPR and UAV SfM Observations

Daniel Mcgrath et al.

Summary: This study combines GPR and UAV-based SfM-MVS surveys to estimate snow depth, density, and SWE. The integration of these measurements provides an accurate and efficient method for snow characterization. The results were validated against independent manual probing and snowpit measurements, demonstrating the reliability of the method. Further developments in snow depth retrieval technologies can expand the spatial extent of this approach.

Seasonal Variability of Snow Density in the Spanish Pyrenees

Eduardo Lastrada et al.

Summary: The study evaluates linear regression models relating snow density (SDEN) in the Spanish Pyrenees with various climatic factors, finding that seasonal accumulated precipitation has the greatest impact on SDEN, followed by temperature. The results improve understanding of SDEN in the Pyrenees.

Impact of dynamic snow density on GlobSnow snow water equivalent retrieval accuracy

Pinja Venalainen et al.

Summary: Snow water equivalent (SWE) is an important variable in describing global seasonal snow cover. Utilizing spaceborne passive microwave observations in combination with weather station snow depth observations can enhance the reliability and accuracy of SWE estimates. Post-processing with dynamic snow density information can improve the overestimation and underestimation of SWE values.
