Rational tuning towards B-sites (B = Mn, Co, Al) on CoB2O4 binary oxide for efficient selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia

Guobin Liu et al.

Summary: NH3 catalytic oxidation technology (NH3-SCO) has shown promise for direct conversion of NH3 to N2 and H2O. However, balancing the catalytic activity and selectivity remains a challenge. In this study, the redox properties and surface oxygen vacancies of a CoB2O4 catalyst were modulated using three elements (Co, Mn, Al) to enhance its activity. CoMn2O4, synthesized with Mn as the B-site element, exhibited increased surface oxygen vacancies and generated Mn3+-Mn4+ pairs that facilitated the redox properties, leading to improved catalytic activity and complete NH3 conversion at 150 degrees C. Additionally, using Mn as the B-site element also promoted the generation of Bronsted acid sites on the catalyst surface, improving its N2 selectivity (65% at 150 degrees C). In situ DRIFTs analysis revealed two reaction mechanisms over CoMn2O4, involving bidentate nitrate and hydrazine as the main intermediate species.
