Cellular Uptake, Metabolism and Sensing of Long-Chain Fatty Acids

Qiburi He et al.

Summary: Fatty acids are essential nutrients for mammals and are obtained primarily from diet. Long-chain fatty acids enter cells through various mechanisms and are activated into acyl-CoA to target specific metabolic pathways. The main pathway for fatty acid catabolism is beta-oxidation, while fatty acid elongation occurs through a series of reactions. The crystal structures of phosphatidic acid phosphatase, membrane-bound fatty acid elongase-condensing enzyme, and other related proteins provide important insights into the utilization of long-chain fatty acids.

Preparation of Human Milk Fat Substitutes: A Review

Xuan Jiang et al.

Summary: Human milk is considered the best choice for infant feeding, and human milk fat plays a crucial role in infant growth and development. When breastfeeding is not possible, infant formula should have a composition similar to human milk fat in order to meet the nutritional needs of infants. Currently, the preparation of human milk fat substitutes focuses on simulating fatty acid composition, using structured lipids, and adding milk fat globule membrane supplements. Evaluation and regulation of these substitutes in infant formula are also important.

Low-Energy Separation Technique on Purification of Unsaturated Fatty Acids of Palm Stearin using Methanol Crystallization Method

Fatimatuzzahraa Mohd Fadzel et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the development of a low-energy and cost-effective separation technique for purifying unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) from Malaysian Palm Stearin. Utilizing a methanol crystallization method, the UFAs were successfully separated and purified, increasing the unsaturation level by about 172% compared to the initial value. This low-energy method shows potential for industrial scale-up and is a cheaper alternative to conventional high-energy fractional distillation processes.
