Selective semi-hydrogenation of alkynes on palladium-selenium nanocrystals

Menglu Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the selective hydrogenation of alkyne to alkene is achieved using palladium-selenium intermetallic nanocrystals (Pd-4.Se-5 NCs, Pd4Se NCs, Pd7Se2 NCs, and Pd7Se4 NCs). The Pd-Se NCs exhibit geometric and electronic synergistic effects that enhance the sigma-pi associative adsorption of C=C bond in alkyne while suppressing the over-hydrogenation of alkene. Specifically, Pd4.5Se NCs show high selectivity (>98.0%) for the semi-hydrogenation of phenylacetylene to styrene, outperforming Pd NCs/C and commercial Lindlar catalyst. This work expands the understanding of Pd-based catalysts for selective hydrogenation and is of significant interest to researchers in material science, chemistry, and catalysis.
