Recent progress on multifunctional electromagnetic interference shielding polymer composites

This study demonstrates the use of embedded three-dimensional (EMB3D) printing to create multi-material polymer lattices, enabling the fabrication of a wide range of periodic and stochastic lattices with tailored mechanical responses by printing multiple materials with different mechanical properties.

Construction of unique conductive networks in carbon nanotubes/polymer composites via poly(?-caprolactone) inducing partial aggregation of carbon nanotubes for microwave shielding enhancement

Summary: In this study, a unique conductive network consisting of individual carbon nanotubes (CNT) and CNT clusters induced by poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) is constructed in CNTs filled CPCs. The effect of different polymer matrices (isotactic polypropylene, polystyrene, and polylactic acid) on the conductive network is evaluated, and the electrical conductivity and microwave shielding properties are compared. The study also discusses the influence of CNTs and PCL loadings on the formation of CNT clusters. The results show that the CNT/CNT-cluster conductive network formed in CNT/PCL/PLA composites exhibits excellent performance in improving electrical conductivity and microwave shielding.

Asymmetric magnetic-electric dual-functional composite foams for ultra-efficient electromagnetic interference shielding with unprecedented low reflection

Summary: Asymmetric composite foams composed of Fe3O4@rGO/CNT/TPU foams and a silver layer were developed using vacuum-assisted hot-pressing and supercritical carbon dioxide foaming. The foam showed excellent impedance matching and wave attenuation capabilities, achieving -46.8 dB reflection loss. With the reflective silver layer, the foam achieved a total shielding effectiveness of 89.2-103.5 dB and a reflection shielding effectiveness of 0.24-0.83 dB. This work provides new insights into the design of high-efficiency shielding materials for cutting-edge EMI shielding applications.

FDM-3D printing LLDPE/BN@GNPs composites with double network structures for high-efficiency thermal conductivity and electromagnetic interference shielding

Superstructure silver micro-tube composites for ultrahigh electromagnetic wave shielding

Summary: This study focuses on the preparation of absorption-dominant electromagnetic shielding materials using silver (Ag) micro-tubes with superstructure fabricated via deposition of Ag nanoparticles on poly(lactic acid) (PLA) fibers. The composites show ultrahigh electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness and low density, attributed to the absorption dominant shielding mechanism of the Ag micro-tubes. The superstructure of the Ag micro-tubes creates efficient surface plasmon resonance, electronic vibration, interfacial polarization, capacitance effect, and conductive loss, contributing to the high absorption and low density of the materials.

Flexible and insulating silicone rubber composites with sandwich structure for thermal management and electromagnetic interference shielding

Summary: This work focuses on the development of CF@Fe2O3/(BN/SR) composites with excellent thermal conductivity, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance, and electrical insulation properties. The sandwich structure of CF@Fe2O3/(BN/SR) composites contributes to effective EMI shielding by absorption-reflection-reabsorption of electromagnetic waves, while BN/SR and CF@Fe2O3 layers enhance thermal conductivity and electrical insulation, respectively. The composites show higher performance in terms of thermal conductivity, EMI shielding effectiveness, volume resistance, and breakdown strength compared to conventional CF/(BN/SR) composites. The CF@Fe2O3/(BN/SR) composites also exhibit better cooling effect than commercial silicon grease in computer testing platforms, indicating promising applications in electronics.

Effect of surface conductivity on electromagnetic shielding of multi-walled carbon nanotubes/Poly(ε-caprolactone) composites

It is found that decreasing surface conductivity leads to a decrease in electromagnetic shielding.
