Nucleation roles of cellulose nanocrystals and chitin nanocrystals in poly (ε-caprolactone) nanocomposites

Jia Li et al.

Summary: Using polysaccharide nanocrystals as fillers in biodegradable polyesters can create completely biodegradable nanocomposites. The study found that chitin nanocrystals and cellulose nanocrystals have completely different effects on the crystallization of poly(epsilon-capro-lactone) (PCL). Chitin nanocrystals retard the nucleation and overall crystallization process of PCL, while cellulose nanocrystals promote nucleation and accelerate crystal growth.

Influence of Chitin Nanocrystals on the Crystallinity and Mechanical Properties of Poly(hydroxybutyrate) Biopolymer

Marta Zaccone et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of pilot-scale produced polyhydroxy butyrate (PHB) biopolymer and chitin nanocrystals (ChNCs) in two different concentrations of nanocomposites. Results show that the addition of ChNCs significantly influences the crystallization of PHB, resulting in slower crystallization, lower overall crystallinity, and smaller crystal size. Furthermore, the addition of ChNCs leads to increased viscosity in the final formulations. The calendering process results in slightly aligned sheets, and the nanocomposites with higher concentration of ChNCs exhibit improved mechanical properties.
