Mitigation Approaches to Prevent Microplastics Effects in the Aquatic Environment: Exploration of Microbeads from Personal Care and Cosmetic Products

Lindani Mdlalose et al.

Summary: This review evaluates the detection of plastic microbeads in aqueous and solid phases, discusses the contradictory quantification of microbeads using traditional analytical techniques and the implications of using coupled systems. It also explains recent advances in the dispersal and interaction of microbeads with other pollutants in the environment and the complications of isolation in sewage sludge.

Comparison of the aerobic biodegradation of biopolymers and the corresponding bioplastics: A review

Emma M. N. Polman et al.

Summary: This review compares the biodegradation rates and mechanisms of biodegradable plastics made from biopolymers with unmodified biopolymers, and finds that structural changes during the production process affect the biodegradation process. Future research should focus on conducting long-term field experiments to better understand biodegradation processes.

Thermal Conductivity Analysis of Chitin and Deacetylated-Chitin Nanofiber Films under Dry Conditions

Jiahao Wang et al.

Summary: The thermal conductivity properties of chitin nanofiber films were evaluated by changing the content of surface amino groups, with results showing that the difference in thermal conductivity depends on the amino group content on the fiber surfaces. The methodology for measuring thermal diffusivity under conditioned humidity could pave the way for more accurate analysis of thermal conductivity performance of hydrophilic materials.

Personal Care and Cosmetic Products as a Potential Source of Environmental Contamination by Microplastics in a Densely Populated Asian City

Saidu M. Bashir et al.

Summary: The study reveals that PCCPs containing microbeads are still widely available for sale in Macao, with polyethylene (PE) being the most common type of microbeads. It estimates that over 37 billion microbeads per year may be released into the environment through wastewater treatment plants. The density of microplastics in coastal sediments varies and the fraction of < 1 mm particles is the most abundant, making up an average of 98.6% of the total.
