Gas barrier properties of polylactide/cellulose nanocrystals nanocomposites

Hajar Faraj et al.

Summary: The gas barrier properties of polylactide (PLA)/cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) nanocomposites were studied, and it was found that surface modified CNCs could be homogeneously dispersed even at high concentrations. All nanocomposites showed better oxygen and carbon dioxide barrier properties than PLA. Surface grafted CNCs provided shielding against water vapor uptake.

Breakdown and buildup mechanisms of cellulose nanocrystal suspensions under shear and upon relaxation probed by SAXS and SALS

Frederic Pignon et al.

Summary: The study investigated the breakdown and buildup mechanisms in concentrated cellulose nanocrystal suspensions under shear and during relaxation upon cessation of shear using small-angle X-ray and light scattering combined with rheometry. It observed dynamic structural changes over nanometer to micrometer lengthscales that were related to the well-known three-regime rheological behavior. The results showed that the suspension exhibited complex and dynamic changes in liquid crystal structures at different length scales in different rheological regimes.

Transparent oxygen barrier nanocellulose composite films with a sandwich structure

Lanxing Du et al.

Summary: Transparent films with symmetric sandwich structure were designed using layer-by-layer assembly of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) and acrylic resin (AR) with a cellulose nanoparticle (CNP) layer. The aspect ratio of CNPs affected film microstructure, resulting in different oxygen transmission rates (OTR). Well-organized CNP layer exhibited lower OTR compared to network layer, with thickness, density, and porosity of CNP layer correlating with OTR. Water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) increased due to additional water pathway, while these cellulose composite films showed excellent light transmittance and tensile strength.
