Extraction, structure, and activity of polysaccharide from Radix astragali

Zhenjie Tang et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the extraction, separation, purification, structure, activity, and modification of Radix astragali polysaccharide (RAP). Enzyme-assisted extraction has been found to have a significantly higher yield than other extraction methods, but the extraction effects and activity efficiency of RAP vary under different conditions. The purification and separation of RAP are crucial factors affecting its yield and activity. Current research on the derivatization of RAP is limited but important. Additionally, further studies on the structure-activity relationship of RAP are needed. Overall, this review provides useful insights for future research on the various important applications of RAP.

Diverse prebiotic effects of isomaltodextrins with different glycosidic linkages and molecular weights on human gut bacteria in vitro

Beibei Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prebiotic effects of different molecular weights and branching structures of isomaltodextrin (IMD) on human intestinal bacteria. The results showed that alpha-1,6 linear IMDs promoted the growth of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, alpha-1,3 branching IMDs produced more butyrate in pure cultures, and alpha-1,2 branching IMDs were efficiently utilized only during mixed fermentation. Lower molecular weight IMDs exhibited better prebiotic effects in pure cultures.

Peroxidative depolymerization of fucosylated glycosaminoglycan: Bond-cleavage pattern and activities of oligosaccharides

Xuelin Tao et al.

Summary: Peroxidative depolymerization of fucosylated glycosaminoglycan (FG) from Stichopus variegatus (SvFG) was performed to obtain mono- and oligo-saccharides. The preferential cleavage of GlcA-beta 1,3-GalNAc4S6S linkage and the susceptibility of uronate glycosidic bond were observed. The oxidation of the reducing end did not impair the anti-iXase activity of FG-derived oligosaccharides.

Polysaccharides from Aconitum carmichaelii leaves: Structure, immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory activities

Yu-Ping Fu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the polysaccharides in the unutilized leaves of Aconitum carmichaelii. It was found that a neutral polysaccharide was a mixture of hetemmannans, and two acidic polysaccharides were pectins containing a homogalacturonan backbone. These polysaccharides were able to modulate the complement system and had anti-inflammatory effects.

Recalcitrant cell wall of Ulva lactuca seaweed is degraded by a single ulvan lyase from family 25 of polysaccharide lyases

Monica M. Costa et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential of an enzyme called ulvan lyase to degrade the cell walls of green macroalgae and release nutritive compounds. The results showed that ulvan lyase was the most efficient enzyme in disrupting the cell walls and promoting the release of reducing sugars and monosaccharides. However, there was no significant release of fatty acids, proteins, or pigments. These findings suggest that ulvan lyase has the potential to enhance the bioaccessibility of bioactive products from green macroalgae for use in the feed industry.

Degradation of complex arabinoxylans by human colonic Bacteroidetes

Gabriel V. Pereira et al.

Summary: This study reveals that human gut bacteria are capable of degrading arabinoxylans, a type of dietary fiber. Some Bacteroidetes bacteria encode esterases for breaking down complex arabinoxylans with ferulic acid side chains, releasing the antioxidant and immunomodulatory compound ferulic acid.
