Geographic access to lung cancer screening among eligible adults living in rural and urban environments in the United States

Liora Sahar et al.

Summary: This study examines access to lung cancer screening nationwide and across rural and urban settings. Geographic information system network analysis is used to estimate access at different distances, and the results show disparities in accessibility between regions and across rural and urban environments. Approximately 5% of the eligible population does not have access to screening facilities within 40 miles, and rural areas have a larger proportion of the population with no access.

Redlining, structural racism, and lung cancer screening disparities

Michael R. Poulson et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of historical redlining and its downstream factors on the completion of lung cancer screening in Boston. The results showed that Black patients had lower odds of screening compared to White patients, and these disparities were more prominent in Black women.

Low-dose CT lung cancer screening uptake: A rural-urban comparison

Anja Zgodic et al.

Summary: The study found no significant differences in LDCT lung cancer screening uptake between rural and urban residents. However, uptake was significantly higher for participants with underlying chronic respiratory conditions, veterans, those with higher pack-year history, and those with poor/fair general health and prior history of cancer. On the other hand, uptake declined with age, higher education level, concerns about paying for medical care, and lack of primary care.

Summary: The study revealed high rates of lung cancer among most never-smoking AANHPI female ethnic groups. Using innovative data integration, the study dispelled the myth that AANHPI females are at overall reduced risk of lung cancer and emphasized the need to disaggregate this highly diverse population.

Intersectionality in cancer care: A systematic review of current research and future directions

Joseph Kelly-Brown et al.

Summary: This review aims to synthesize the literature on intersectionality in relation to disparities across the cancer care continuum. The study found that patients with intersectional identities often face barriers to cancer care, including screening, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. The use of an intersectional lens in future clinical and research work will enable a more comprehensive and holistic approach to the care of cancer patients.

Using Geospatial Analysis to Evaluate Access to Lung Cancer Screening in the United States

Liora Sahar et al.

Summary: The study found that the majority of adults aged 55 to 79 in the United States have easy access to lung cancer screening registry facilities, but there are variations in access across different regions. It is recommended to calculate accessibility at a more detailed level of geography and to pay attention to geographic disparities in order to identify areas in need of interventions.

Potential Disparities by Sex and Race or Ethnicity in Lung Cancer Screening Eligibility Rates

Paul F. Pinsky et al.

Summary: Eligibility rates for low-dose CT scan lung cancer screening vary by sex and race/ethnicity, with men having higher rates than women and non-Hispanic Whites having higher rates than other racial/ethnic groups. Disparities are evident in eligibility to incidence ratios, with non-Hispanic Black men having higher lung cancer burden but lower eligibility to incidence ratios compared to non-Hispanic White men. Consideration of smoking duration in risk assessment criteria may help address current disparities.
