Apoptosis in Type 2 Diabetes: Can It Be Prevented? Hippo Pathway Prospects

Agnieszka Kilanowska et al.

Summary: Diabetes mellitus is a complex disease with various causes and mechanisms. Hyperglycemia not only leads to serious complications but also triggers beta cell apoptosis. Manipulating the Hippo signaling pathway and enhancing pancreatic protective factors may serve as potential strategies for preserving beta cells and treating diabetes.

Alpha-lipoic acid preconditioning plus ischemic postconditioning provides additional protection against myocardial reperfusion injury of diabetic rats: modulation of autophagy and mitochondrial function

Behnaz Mokhtari et al.

Summary: Pretreatment with LA in diabetic rats restored cardioprotection by IPostC via modulating autophagy and restoring mitochondrial function. This combined conditioning strategy may effectively reduce I/R damage in diabetic hearts.

Acute coronary syndromes in diabetic patients, outcome, revascularization, and antithrombotic therapy

Elena Emilia Babes et al.

Summary: Diabetes worsens the progression of atherosclerosis, increasing the risk of developing acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Diabetic patients experience earlier onset ACS and have poorer outcomes due to increased inflammation and thrombosis. Despite advancements in treatment, diabetic patients still have worse outcomes compared to non-diabetic patients.

Reperfusion Cardiac Injury: Receptors and the Signaling Mechanisms

Summary: Ca2+ overload and increased reactive oxygen species production play a significant role in reperfusion injury of cardiomyocytes. The NLRP3 inflammasome and increased adrenergic system activity during coronary perfusion restoration worsen the damage to the heart.

Alpha-lipoic acid potentiates the anti-arrhythmic effects of ischemic postconditioning in the setting of cardiac ischemia/reperfusion injury in diabetic rats

Sanaz Gholami et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the anti-arrhythmic effect of ischemic postconditioning (IPostC) and alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury of diabetic rats and explore the involvement of connexin-43 and nitric oxide (NO) in this process. The results showed that preconditioning with ALA restored the anti-arrhythmic effect of IPostC in diabetic hearts, which may be mediated by increased connexin-43 expression and NO levels.

Summary: The study revealed that apoptotic processes in the ventricular myocardium were enhanced in essential hypertension and diabetes mellitus, while in combined pathology, there was a less marked increase in Bax content and a significantly increased expression of antiapoptotic Bcl-2.
