Application of computational fluid dynamics for modeling of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis as a sustainable energy resource in different reactor configurations: A review

Zahra Teimouri et al.

Summary: The increasing global energy demand has led to the search for renewable and clean energy resources. Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is a method that converts syngas to hydrocarbons, offering an attractive and sustainable energy source. However, the complexity of FTS involving fluid dynamics and reaction kinetics presents challenges. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) helps in understanding the fluid dynamics within FTS reactors and optimizing operating conditions for improved efficiency. This review analyzes the capabilities of CFD simulation in predicting FTS performance in different reactor types and addresses current challenges.

Effects of solid particles on bubble breakup and coalescence in slurry bubble columns

Mojtaba Mokhtari et al.

Summary: Bubble size distribution (BSD) is a crucial parameter in the design and scale-up of slurry bubble columns (SBCs). In this study, novel bubble breakup and coalescence models were developed to predict the effects of solids concentration and particle size on the bubble breakup and coalescence rates. An integrated population balance and hydrodynamic model was also developed to estimate the BSD and gas holdup in a slurry bubble column. The developed models were successfully validated and parametric studies were conducted to investigate the effects of solid particles on the bubble breakup, bubble coalescence, and BSD.

Effect of solid loading and particle size on the phase holdup distribution and bubble behaviour in a pilot-scale slurry bubble column

Mojtaba Mokhtari et al.

Summary: The complexities in the hydrodynamics of slurry bubble columns create uncertainty in reactor design and scale-up. Understanding local hydrodynamics can help alleviate this issue. The effect of solids properties on the local hydrodynamic parameters is a critical subject of study, with experiments showing non-uniform distribution of solid particles and gas holdup in the column.
