Differences among sexes in presentation and outcomes in acute type A aortic dissection repair

Elizabeth L. Norton et al.

Summary: Female sex is a known risk factor in most cardiac surgeries, but its association with acute type A aortic dissection repair is unclear. In this study, women were found to be older than men and had fewer comorbidities, shorter surgery time, but required more intraoperative blood transfusion. Women also had significantly lower operative mortality, especially in older age groups. Physicians and women should be aware of the risk of aortic dissection and consider surgery, especially in older female patients.

Type A aortic dissection is more aggressive in women

Simone Gasser et al.

Summary: The study found that female patients with acute aortic dissection type A were older and had a more aggressive and complicated preoperative course. They also had impaired neurological outcomes and lower survival rates.

Sex-Based Aortic Dissection Outcomes From the International Registry of Acute Aortic Dissection

Lauren Huckaby et al.

Summary: In-hospital mortality remains higher among women with TAAD but shows improvement in the last decade. Significant differences in presentation were noted in women, including older age and greater evidence of malperfusion. Although no distinctions in 5-year mortality or reintervention were observed, a tailored surgical approach should be considered to reduce sex disparities in early mortality rates for TAAD.

Sex and Gender Bias as a Mechanistic Determinant of Cardiovascular Disease Outcomes

Isabel Kim et al.

Summary: Biases at provider, patient, and societal level contribute to disparities in cardiovascular disease recognition and treatment between sexes and genders. Provider bias leads to under-recognition and undertreatment of female-predominant cardiovascular disease, while less research on female-predominant phenotypes results in undertreatment of female patients. Women are less likely to seek urgent medical attention due to societal bias and have fewer discussions on risk factors for coronary artery disease compared to men.

Preoperative and intraoperative risk factors of postoperative stroke in total aortic arch replacement and stent elephant trunk implantation

Hao Jia et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify risk factors for postoperative stroke in patients with acute type A aortic dissection (AAAD) undergoing total aortic arch replacement (TAAR) combined with stent elephant implantation (SETI) and construct predictive models. The study found that platelet count, International normalized ratio, presence of diabetic history, and cardiopulmonary bypass time were independent predictors of postoperative stroke.

Gender-related differences in patients with acute aortic dissection type A

Bartosz Rylski et al.

Summary: Acute aortic dissection type A occurs almost twice as frequently in men compared to women. Women with this condition tend to be older, while men are more commonly diagnosed with visceral and renal malperfusion, and receive aortic root replacements more frequently. Despite differences in presentation and treatment, the outcomes of acute aortic dissection type A are similar in both genders.

The Lancet women and cardiovascular disease Commission: reducing the global burden by 2030

Birgit Vogel et al.

Summary: Despite decades of grassroots campaigns to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease in women, there has been stagnation in reducing the overall burden of the disease in the past decade. This Commission aims to fill knowledge gaps and provide recommendations to reduce the global burden of cardiovascular disease in women by 2030, with a focus on raising awareness of gender-related disparities.
