Model test study on sliding-toppling composite deformation evolution of anti-dip layered rock slope

Yifei Gong et al.

Summary: The study investigated the overall sliding-toppling composite deformation and failure process of anti-dip rock slopes in the Three Rivers basin in China through a model test. The research analyzed the macroscopic deformation, rock displacement, and maximum flexural surface during slope deformation and failure, and revealed the composite toppling failure mechanism and evolution law of the anti-dip layered rock slope under different stress conditions. The results were validated through numerical simulations and the failure mode of the anti-dip rock slope under external load was classified into five main stages.

Effects of different fracture parameters on microseisms induced by hydraulic fracturing

Kun Shan et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of different fracture parameters on microseisms induced by hydraulic fracturing are explored through numerical simulations. The results show that the presence of faults affects the propagation direction of fractures and increases the magnitude and distribution range of microseismic events. The in-situ stress state and fracture occurrence also have significant effects on the magnitude and distribution of induced microseisms.

Quantitative analysis of the influence of bedding planes on the deformation of layered carbonaceous slate around tunnel

Hongming Tian et al.

Summary: Due to the effect of bedding planes, inaccurate deformation prediction for thin-layered rock often leads to severe damage to tunnel support in high in situ stress zones. Numerical simulations using a continuum-interface numerical model were conducted to investigate the influences of bedding planes on tunnel deformation. The feasibility of the numerical model was verified by comparing numerical results with field observations, and a deformation prediction equation considering the effect of bedding planes was proposed for layered carbonaceous slates based on the numerical results. The application of the proposed equation showed that it is reliable when the bedded thickness exceeds 0.05 m, but underestimates deformation for thin-layered rock with a bedded thickness less than 0.05 m.

Deformation mechanisms of sidewall in layered rock strata dipping steeply against the inner space of large underground powerhouse cavern

Ang Li et al.

Summary: This study critically investigates the deformation mechanisms of high sidewalls in steeply inclined layered rock strata against the inner space of underground powerhouse caverns. Field surveys, in-situ tests, beam theory, and the discrete element method (DEM) are used to analyze displacement features and deformation mechanisms, as well as suggest applicable supports for the high sidewalls.

A Rough Discrete Fracture Network Model for Geometrical Modeling of Jointed Rock Masses and the Anisotropic Behaviour

Peitao Wang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a rough discrete fractures network (RDFN) characterization method based on the Fourier transform method. By changing the different Fourier series values, the unified characterization of the complex geometric fracture network is achieved. The study findings suggest that the geometry of the joint network significantly influences the strength and failure modes of jointed rock masses, and the orientation of the fracture sets plays a crucial role in the failure modes of opening.

Influences of foliation orientation and lateral stress difference on the deformation and fracturing of a thin-layered rock around underground excavations: insight from multi-axial loading tests

Xufeng Liu et al.

Summary: The deformation and failure characteristics of layered rocks are influenced by the orientation of thin-layered structures. In tunnel design, it is important to consider the angle between the tunnel axis and the foliation strike to maintain stability. The findings of this research provide insights for optimizing tunnel orientation and preventing anisotropic deformation.

Zhihong Wang et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties and failure modes of stratified rock mass are crucial for solving problems in engineering protection and construction. This study reveals the relationship between the strength difference of lithological units and the overall uniaxial compressive strength in stratified rock mass, as well as investigates the crack initiation, propagation behavior, and different failure modes. The findings provide valuable references for further decision-making on cracking problems.

Study on the mechanisms of crack turning in bedded rock

Xiao-Wei Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that crack turning in bedded rock involves five types, and not only includes tensile cracks but also a combination of tensile and shear crack segments. In addition, crack turning involves not only the continuous propagation of a single macro-crack but also the coalescence of two macro-cracks.

An experimental and analytical study of rate-dependent shear behaviour of rough joints

Hua Li et al.

Summary: Understanding the shear behavior of rough joints is important in rock engineering, especially under dynamic loadings. This study investigated joint shear behavior at different shear rates and developed a rate-dependent constitutive model. The findings suggest that the shear strength of joints varies with roughness and shear rate, with a proposed viscous joint model showing promise in describing shear stiffness evolution.
