Large eddy simulation study on pedestrian-level wind environments around elevated walkways and influential factors in ideal urban street canyons

Lan Chen et al.

Summary: Constructing elevated walkway systems is an effective strategy for improving pedestrian walkability and road safety in densely populated cities. However, the addition of elevated walkways inside streets can affect the local wind environment, which has been rarely studied. This research examines the pedestrian-level wind environment around elevated walkways in 3D urban street canyons using large eddy simulations. The study finds that elevated walkways have an adverse effect on pedestrian-level wind environments, with average wind velocities decreasing by more than 20% and gust wind velocities by more than 30%.

Modeling of street-scale pollutant dispersion by coupled simulation of chemical reaction, aerosol dynamics, and CFD

Chao Lin et al.

Summary: In the urban environment, gas and particles have adverse effects on pedestrians' health. Conventional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods cannot predict the formation of secondary pollutants accurately and lead to uncertain results. This study couples the modular box model SSH-aerosol, which simulates the evolution of gas, primary and secondary aerosols, with CFD software OpenFOAM and Code_Saturne. A transient dispersion simulation of pollutants emitted from traffic in a street canyon using the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS) model is conducted. The simulated concentrations are compared with field measurements on a street in Greater Paris, and the results show better agreement for NO2 and PM10 concentrations than conventional CFD simulations.

Understanding the effects of roadside hedges on the horizontal and vertical distributions of air pollutants in street canyons

Prashant Kumar et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of an evergreen hedge on particulate matter distribution in a street canyon, finding significant reductions in vertical concentrations but different horizontal concentration trends. The presence of the hedge led to varying effects on particle concentrations based on proximity, with closer areas experiencing reductions and farther areas showing increases.

The effect of tree planting on traffic pollutant dispersion in an urban street canyon using large eddy simulation with a recycling and rescaling inflow generation method

W. A. McMullan et al.

Summary: The influence of various tree planting configurations on tracer gas dispersion in an urban street canyon is numerically studied using OpenFOAM Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The results show that tree stand density affects pollutant dispersion, with tree crowns reducing the effectiveness of the canyon vortex in ventilating the street and enhancing pollutant concentration at pedestrian level.

Obstacles influence on existing urban canyon ventilation and air pollutant concentration: A review of potential measures

Riccardo Buccolieri et al.

Summary: Air pollution in cities poses a significant long-term health risk to urban populations. Research has explored passive methods, such as using "obstacles," to alter urban canyon airflow and enhance pollutant dispersion. This paper summarizes newer studies, their findings, and challenges in implementing these measures for existing urban canyons, aiming to develop urban design guidelines that improve air quality in the urban environment.

Impact of building facade geometrical details on pollutant dispersion in street canyons

Xing Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of building facade geometrical details on the pollutant transport mechanism in long street canyons. The results show that building balconies can strongly affect the wind flow field and pollutant dispersion. The presence of balconies decreases the convective contribution to pollutant exchange in long street canyons.

The influence of roadside green belts and street canyon aspect ratios on air pollution dispersion and personal exposure

Xiaoxuan Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of roadside green belts, spatial urban street layout, and wind speed on the dispersion of vehicle exhaust emissions in street canyons using numerical simulations. Results show that pollutant levels decrease with tree spacing and the aspect ratio of street canyons. Setting green belts in the center of roads and near the leeward side of buildings can benefit pollutant dispersion.

Spatiotemporal Spectral Analysis of Turbulent Structures and Pollutant Removal in Two-Dimensional Street Canyon

Bingchao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study uses spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) to analyze turbulent structures in a two-dimensional street canyon and quantitatively assess their contribution to pollutant removal. The study identifies fluctuation patterns at various scales and determines the ranges of spanwise wavenumber and frequency associated with pollutant removal events. A complex analysis reveals that large-scale structures have the potential to indirectly enhance or weaken pollutant removal by amplifying or suppressing small-scale structures.

Parameterizing the aerodynamic effect of trees in street canyons for the street network model MUNICH using the CFD model Code_Saturne

Alice Maison et al.

Summary: Trees in street canyons reduce wind velocity and limit pollutant dispersion, which should be considered in air quality models. This study uses computational fluid dynamics simulations to quantify the effects of trees on wind speed and pollutant dispersion, and proposes a parameterization method for incorporating these effects into the model. The results show that the tree crown significantly impacts wind speed and pollutant dispersion in the street, depending on tree characteristics.

CFD simulations on high-buoyancy gas dispersion in the wake of an isolated cubic building using steady RANS model and LES

Chao Lin et al.

Summary: The study used computational fluid dynamics simulations to predict the dispersion of high-buoyancy exhaust gas from buildings and validated the results with wind tunnel experiments. It was found that the steady RANS model showed good agreement with time-averaged velocity but underestimated turbulent kinetic energy, while LES accurately predicted both. RANS model predicted high time-averaged concentration near the exhaust port but overestimated ground-level values, while LES adequately predicted both time-averaged and fluctuating concentrations. An investigation into the turbulent Schmidt number Sc-t in RANS model revealed that a small Sc-t increased overall prediction accuracy, while a large Sc-t compensated for overestimation on ground-level time-averaged concentrations.
