Effects of intrauterine and post-natal exposure to air pollution on children's pneumonia: Key roles in different particulate matters exposure during critical time windows

Summary: The study found that exposure to pollutants during pregnancy and after birth has an impact on children's doctor diagnosed pneumonia (DDP). Intrauterine and post-natal exposure to PM2.5, PM2.5-10, and PM10 were associated with DDP. Intrauterine exposure to PM2.5 and post-natal exposure to PM10 were associated with increased risk of pneumonia. The second trimester, third trimester, and first year after birth were identified as critical windows for PM2.5, PM2.5-10, and PM10 exposure. Daytime exposure to traffic-related pollution, especially in early life, increased the risk of DDP.

Parental socioeconomic status and asthma in children: Using a population-based cohort and family design

Summary: The study confirms an association between low parental SES (measured as education) and asthma/wheeze, with cousin comparison suggesting that this association is not solely due to confounding of unknown familial factors, supporting a causal relationship. However, the relationship between parental income and asthma/wheeze is less clear. Further research is needed to investigate the possible mechanisms underlying the association between parental education and asthma/wheeze.

Effect of preconceptional, prenatal and postnatal exposure to home environmental factors on childhood pneumonia: A key role in early life exposure

Summary: This study found an association between early life exposure to indoor environmental factors and childhood pneumonia. Exposure to new furniture, redecoration, mold/damp stains, and mold or damp clothing or bedding during different periods was significantly related to pneumonia risk. Environmental tobacco smoke and exposure to nonflowering indoor plants were also linked to an increased risk of pneumonia. Furthermore, renovation and mold/dampness exposure increased pneumonia risk, while living near traffic road and exposure to high levels of traffic-related air pollution and high temperature also significantly increased pneumonia risk.
