The impact of wooden studs on the moisture risk of timber frame constructions

Staf Roels et al.

Summary: As timber frame constructions continue to grow in popularity due to their role in reducing CO2-emissions and embodied energy, it is important to understand and address the issues of moisture damage. This paper investigates the impact of neglecting wooden elements in the numerical simulations on the risk assessment of timber frame walls. The results show that neglecting wooden elements can lead to significantly higher levels of interstitial condensation in certain cold climates and wall configurations.

Application of Machine Learning to Assist a Moisture Durability Tool

Mikael Salonvaara et al.

Summary: The design of moisture-durable building enclosures is complex, and hygrothermal simulations require in-depth knowledge. Machine learning was used to simplify the design process and predict the moisture durability of a building enclosure. The results show that machine learning accurately predicts performance compared to hygrothermal simulations.

Hygrothermal assessment of timber frame walls using a convolutional neural network

Astrid Tijskens et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a method to quickly predict the hygrothermal response of timber frame walls using a metamodel, which has been shown to accurately predict time series and help estimate moisture damage risks. Suggestions regarding timber frame wall compositions are presented, along with methods to prevent mold growth and condensation.
