Combining circular and LCA indicators for the early design of urban projects

M. Saade et al.

Summary: This study develops and tests an approach for evaluating the overall environmental performance of urban projects. The study demonstrates that Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has the ability to evaluate circular economy practices at the scale of an urban project. However, there are limitations in LCA, and further research is needed to improve resource depletion evaluation and biogenic carbon accounting in eco-design LCA tools. The study also emphasizes that circularity indicators should complement LCA indicators in the eco-design process.

Comparative Life Cycle Assessment of Mass Timber and Concrete Residential Buildings: A Case Study in China

Cindy X. Chen et al.

Summary: As the population in China's urban areas continues to grow, the building sector has become a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Concrete and steel, which are commonly used in construction, account for 60% of carbon emissions from building materials. Mass timber, on the other hand, is considered as a more environmentally friendly alternative with unique structural features. However, there is still a lack of research on mass timber buildings in China. This study used a life cycle assessment (LCA) approach to compare the environmental impacts of a concrete building and an equivalent timber building. The results showed that the timber building achieved a 25% reduction in global warming potential compared to the concrete building.

A framework for dynamic life cycle sustainability assessment and policy analysis of built environment through a system dynamics approach

Ann Francis et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a system dynamics-based methodological framework for Dynamic Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (D-LCSA) in the building sector, which addresses the current issue of sustainability assessment focusing primarily on the environmental dimension. The case study results in India demonstrate that ignoring time-dependent dynamic aspects leads to underestimating the overall sustainability impacts.

Determining the impacts and recovery potentials of a modular designed residential building using the novel LCA-C2C-PBSCI method

Prince Antwi-Afari et al.

Summary: This study adopts a novel method to assess the impact and recovery potentials of a modular designed residential building in China. It is found that the product utility, material mass, and recyclability plan of the building significantly influence its recyclability and impact potentials. The recommended scenario has high recoverable potential but low impact potentials. This method allows decision-makers to consider the environmental impacts as well as the technical, social, and economic implications towards sustainable development.
