Random Forests for Spatially Dependent Data

Arkajyoti Saha et al.

Summary: Spatial linear mixed-models are widely used for geospatial data analysis but often ignore spatial correlation in the presence of nonlinear covariate effects. Random forests, a popular method for estimating nonlinear functions, also suffer from the same issue. We propose a novel extension called RF-GLS that incorporates the spatial correlation modeled using Gaussian process in random forests, and show its superior performance in estimation and prediction compared to traditional random forests.

Nonlinear effects of urban and industrial forms on surface urban heat island: Evidence from 162 Chinese prefecture-level cities

Yujia Ming et al.

Summary: This study used the random forest model to analyze the daytime and nighttime urban heat island effect in 162 prefectural-level cities in China, and found that industrial and urban forms have nonlinear and threshold effects on the urban heat island effect. Industrial diversity and urban contiguity are the most critical non-natural factors influencing daytime and nighttime urban heat island effect.

Space-time estimation of the urban heat island in Rome (Italy): Overall assessment and effects on the energy performance of buildings

Gabriele Battista et al.

Summary: The study examines the impact of Urban Heat Island (UHI) on building energy performance in Rome, Italy, using data from 23 weather stations. Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis is used to explore correlations between urban features and UHI. Dynamic simulations based on different weather data are conducted to estimate heating and cooling energy needs for two types of residential buildings. The results show significant temperature differences due to UHI, with variations ranging from -33.28% to 93.25% for heating and cooling energy demands.

Comparative analysis in thermal behaviour of common urban building materials and vegetation and consequences for urban heat island effect

E. (Eva) Stache et al.

Summary: Urban heat island is a serious threat to urban well-being, this study experimentally quantifies the role of different urban materials and vegetation types in surface energy balance. Significant thermal behavior differences were found among different vegetation surfaces, with moss being the most effective in preventing urban heat island.

Relationships between building characteristics, urban form and building energy use in different local climate zone contexts: An empirical study in Seoul

Parth Bansal et al.

Summary: The influence of building context on the relationship between building and its energy use has been studied. This research uses the local climate zone (LCZ) as buildings' thermal context area and examines the relationship between building characteristics, urban form, and residential building energy use in different LCZ contexts. The study finds that LCZs have significant impacts on building energy and the effects of building characteristics on energy use. The findings suggest the promising application of the LCZ framework in understanding the form-energy relationship in complex urban environments.

The effect of spatial heterogeneity in urban morphology on surface urban heat islands

Wei Liao et al.

Summary: This study examines the potential impacts of spatial heterogeneity on surface urban heat island (SUHIs) through a case study of Greater London and Seoul. Results indicate that measures of heterogeneity in green space ratio, building coverage ratio, and canyon H/W ratio significantly impact land surface temperatures.

Urban heat island (UHI) intensity and magnitude estimations: A systematic literature review

Se Woong Kim et al.

Summary: The severity of urban heat islands (UHIs) is increasing, leading to growing damage. Further research is needed to accurately estimate and analyze the intensity and magnitude of UHIs. This systematic literature review (SLR) highlights the need to modify the existing UHI classification to reflect the vertical and horizontal ranges where UHIs occur.
