Contrast sensitivity function in patients with macular disease and good visual acuity

Karen M. Wai et al.

Summary: The contrast sensitivity function (CSF) measured with the qCSF method was significantly reduced in eyes affected by macular disease despite good visual acuity compared to healthy control eyes. Reductions in CS thresholds were most notable at low and intermediate spatial frequencies (1.5 cpd, 3 cpd, and 6 cpd). The qCSF method shows promise as a clinical tool for quantifying subtle visual deficits that may be missed by current testing methods.

Degree of Myopia and Glaucoma Risk: A Dose-Response Meta-analysis

Ahnul Ha et al.

Summary: This study aimed to verify the dose-response relation between the degree of myopia and the risk of open-angle glaucoma (OAG). The findings showed a significant association between myopia and OAG, with each unit increase in myopia associated with a 20% increase in glaucoma risk. The risk was found to increase more steeply in individuals with high-degree myopia, indicating a non-linear relationship.

Contrast Sensitivity Is Associated With Chorioretinal Thickness and Vascular Density of Eyes in Simple Early-Stage High Myopia

Xinting Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with simple high myopia have reduced contrast sensitivity, thinner retinal and choroidal thickness, and lower retinal vascular density compared to low to moderate myopic eyes. The results suggest that the contrast sensitivity function is a sensitive functional endpoint in simple early-stage high myopia.

Identifying the Retinal Layers Linked to Human Contrast Sensitivity Via Deep Learning

Foroogh Shamsi et al.

Summary: This study used a deep learning model to investigate the relationship between retinal layers and a person's contrast sensitivity. The results showed that the thickness of the ganglion cell and inner plexiform layers, which reflect the count of retinal ganglion cells, were significantly correlated with contrast sensitivity. This finding confirms the structure and function relationship for contrast sensitivity and highlights the importance of retinal ganglion cell density.

Longitudinal In Vivo Changes in Radial Peripapillary Capillaries and Optic Nerve Head Structure in Non-Human Primates With Early Experimental Glaucoma

Gwen Musial et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore whether a loss of radial peripapillary capillaries (RPCs) precedes neuronal loss in glaucoma, and found that in most eyes with experimental glaucoma (EG), RPC density decreased before (or simultaneous with) a change in retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT), suggesting that vascular factors may play a role in axonal loss in early glaucoma.

Association of ocular blood flow and contrast sensitivity in normal tension glaucoma

David Kuerten et al.

Summary: The study found a relationship between retinal blood flow alterations and contrast sensitivity loss in patients with normal tension glaucoma, indicating a disease-related link between retinal blood flow and visual function. However, this association was not observed in healthy volunteers.

The Effect of Ametropia on Glaucomatous Visual Field Loss

Eun Young Choi et al.

Summary: The study explored the relationship between ametropia and patterns of visual field loss in glaucoma. Myopia was associated with decreased PD at paracentral and temporal VF locations, while hyperopia was linked to decreased PD at Bjerrum and nasal step locations. The severity of VF loss modulated the effect of ametropia.

Optical Coherence Tomography Evaluation of Peripapillary and Macular Structure Changes in Pre-perimetric Glaucoma, Early Perimetric Glaucoma, and Ocular Hypertension: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Yuxin Tong et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with early perimetric glaucoma (EG) had significantly thinner peripapillary and macular structures compared to patients with pre-perimetric glaucoma (PPG), as well as compared to those with ocular hypertension (OHT), based on optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements.
