Nutritional enrichment of fruit peel wastes using lipid accumulating Aurantiochytrium strain as feed for aquaculture in the North-East Region of India

Diganta Kumar Saikia et al.

Summary: Utilization of fruit peel wastes for growing thraustochytrids can help reduce the environmental and economic costs associated with aquaculture industry feedstock. This study found that fruit peels, such as orange, pineapple, banana, and mausambi, contain high carbohydrate content and reducing sugars that are essential for the growth of thraustochytrids. By optimizing the composition of fruit peels, it was possible to enrich thraustochytrids with fatty acids. This research expands the potential of using fruit peel wastes for nutritional enrichment and highlights the importance of circular bioeconomy and waste valorization.

Characterization of cellular development and fatty acid accumulation in thraustochytrid Aurantiochytrium strains of Taiwan

Natarajan Velmurugan et al.

Summary: Two new thraustochytrid isolates from Taiwan mangroves, Aurantiochytrium sp. IMB169 and Aurantiochytrium sp. IMB171, were characterized for their long-chain saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids using transmission electron microscopy and flow cytometry with BODIPY staining. The study revealed a progressive accumulation of lipid products in both isolates, with IMB169 showing a high level of docosahexaenoic acid. Qualitative and analytical results were validated by gas chromatography, and a quantitative baseline was established for efficient bioprocessing methodology development.

Summary: This study employed a two-stage adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) strategy to enhance the DHA production in Thraustochytrid Aurantiochytrium sp., resulting in the successful obtaining of the end-point strain E-81 with high DHA content. The increased lipid accumulation and DHA content in E-81 strain were attributed to the up-regulated expression of key enzymes involved in lipid accumulation and polyunsaturated fatty acid synthase, respectively.

Alteration in the Lipid Profile and the Desaturases Activity in Patients With Severe Pneumonia by SARS-CoV-2

Israel Perez-Torres et al.

Summary: The lipid metabolism of host cells is hijacked by SARS-CoV-2, causing changes in fatty acid profiles and desaturase activity, leading to alterations in total fatty acids, phospholipids, and non-esterified fatty acids. These changes may facilitate virus replication while also triggering the host cell's defense mechanisms to repair damage caused by the virus to cell membranes.

This study screened 14 isolates of marine oomycetous species and found different fatty acid profiles among species and isolates. Salispina spinosa showed the highest level of arachidonic acid production, while Halophytophthora avicenniae IMB212 had the highest percentage of EPA and H. polymorphica 1MB227 had the highest yield. Further research may lead to the discovery of high production isolates with industrial significance.
