Effect of Vitamin D Supplementation on Bone Mass in Infants With 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Concentrations Less Than 50 nmol/L A Prespecified Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Clinical Trial

Nathalie Gharibeh et al.

Summary: This study examined whether infants with low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations below 50 nmol/L required a higher dose of vitamin D supplementation. The study found no significant difference in bone mineral accretion between infants receiving 1000 IU and 400 IU of vitamin D per day. Therefore, a standard dose of 400 IU per day of vitamin D supplementation is sufficient for breastfed infants in Montreal.

Disparities in Vitamin D Status of Newborn Infants from a Diverse Sociodemographic Population in Montreal, Canada

Hope A. Weiler et al.

Summary: Most newborn infants in the study had adequate vitamin D status, with one-fifth being deficient. Disparities were found between different population groups. Maternal use of multivitamins preconception and during pregnancy is recommended for achieving adequate neonatal vitamin D status.

Analysis of the effect of vitamin D supplementation and sex on Vdr, Cyp2r1 and Cyp27b1 gene expression in Wistar rats' tissues

Maria Oczkowicz et al.

Summary: Our study found that vitamin D supplementation had minimal impact on growth traits and biochemical blood indices, with a slight decrease in heart size observed in females and a potential increase in triglyceride levels in males. Vitamin D supplementation did not alter the expression of the Vdr gene in analyzed tissues, but showed a clear downregulation of the Cyp27b1 gene in a dose-dependent manner in the liver and kidney. Sex differences were observed in the regulation of Vdr and vitamin D metabolising genes in the kidney and other extra-renal tissues, suggesting a role of sex in the metabolism of vitamin D.

Vitamin D and bone minerals in neonates

Steven A. Abrams

Summary: Osteopenia and rickets are common issues for high-risk infants, with very low birth weight infants often needing additional bone minerals due to low intake of calcium and phosphorus. While full-term infants who are small for gestational age may also require supplementation, the exact management approach is less clear. Providing vitamin D is important for all infants, but evidence for high doses in healthy preterm neonates is not definitive. Recommendations for vitamin D supplementation vary for different infant populations based on risk factors.
