Exploring the relationship between socioeconomic deprivation index and Alzheimer's disease using summary-level data: From genetic correlation to causality

Jing Dai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between socioeconomic deprivation and Alzheimer's disease (AD) using the Townsend deprivation index (TDI) and found a positive genetic correlation between the two traits. Pleiotropy analysis identified 87 distinct pleiotropic genes, and Mendelian randomization methods revealed a causal connection between TDI and AD. This study provides important insights into the genetic components underlying TDI and AD and has implications for addressing health disparities among economically disadvantaged individuals.

Association between hearing aid use and all-cause and cause-specific dementia: an analysis of the UK Biobank cohort

Fan Jiang et al.

Summary: The use of hearing aids is associated with a similar risk of dementia in people with hearing loss as compared to those without. Hearing loss accounts for 29.6% of the attributable risk of dementia, and the association between hearing aid use and dementia is partially mediated by reducing social isolation, loneliness, and depressed mood.

Association of Cardiometabolic Disease With Cancer in the Community

Elizabeth E. Liu et al.

Summary: Background: Obesity and cardiometabolic dysfunction are associated with the risk and severity of specific cancers. This study found associations between obesity and visceral adipose tissue accumulation with increased risk for gastrointestinal and gynecologic cancers, while obesity was associated with a lower risk for lung cancer. Additionally, higher C-reactive protein levels were associated with an increased risk for several types of cancer.

Summary: This study found that consuming more than one serving of sugar-sweetened beverages and artificially sweetened beverages per day was associated with a higher risk of developing cardiometabolic multimorbidity in patients with a single cardiometabolic disease. In contrast, the intake of pure fruit/vegetable juices per day was inversely associated with the risk of cardiometabolic multimorbidity.

The individual and combined associations of depression and socioeconomic status with risk of major cardiovascular events: A prospective cohort study

Regina Prigge et al.

Summary: This large prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the associations between depression, low socioeconomic status (SES), and the risk of major cardiovascular events (MCVE). The study found that depression, low education, high deprivation, and low income were individually associated with increased risks of MCVE. Depression was associated with increased risks of MCVE in individuals with both high and low SES, with particularly high risks among those living in areas of high deprivation.
