Violence and sexual abuse rates before and during the Covid-19 pandemic: A prospective population-based study on Norwegian youth

Else-Marie Augusti et al.

Summary: This study compares rates of violence and sexual abuse against adolescents before and during the pandemic. Findings indicate a slight increase in sexual abuse by an adult during the pandemic, but a decrease in psychological violence by a parent. Overall, violence and sexual abuse rates remained stable during these two time periods, although some risk factors were amplified during the pandemic. The study highlights the need for ongoing monitoring of disproportionate risk among certain groups of adolescents.

The lasting consequences of childhood sexual abuse on human capital and economic well-being

Laura E. Henkhaus

Summary: This study examines the impacts of childhood sexual abuse on human capital and economic well-being using a representative sample from the United States. The findings suggest that childhood sexual abuse leads to lower educational attainment and worse labor market outcomes. The results are robust, and the effects of childhood sexual abuse are similar for both males and females. The study also highlights that abuse by someone other than a caregiver has a significant influence on predicting negative outcomes.

Summary: Disclosure of childhood sexual abuse is a complex process shaped by individual, familial, and systemic characteristics. Over-the-counter analgesics use is associated with pain and psychological distress among adolescents: a mixed effects approach in cross-sectional survey data from Norway

Rune Jonassen et al.

Summary: The study found that females are more likely to use OTCA than males, with headaches being the strongest predictor of weekly OTCA use followed by abdominal pain. Depression and anxiety are the strongest psychological predictors of weekly OTCA use, and higher symptom levels and being female increase the strength of this association. Anxiety and depression also predict weekly OTCA use after controlling for physiological pain.

The results suggest that childhood maltreatment may increase the risk of adolescent cannabis use. While some studies considered variations in the timing of cannabis initiation and gender differences, further exploration of the role of adolescent cannabis use in the causal pathway between childhood abuse and adult mental health problems is needed.

Gender Differences in the Disclosure of Sexual Abuse in Chilean Adolescents

Cristobal Guerra et al.

Summary: Child sexual abuse is a common issue in Chile, but victims often struggle to disclose it, especially boys due to cultural factors.
