Coping with salt stress-interaction of halotolerant bacteria in crop plants: A mini review

Kesava Priyan Ramasamy et al.

Summary: Salinity is a major abiotic stress factor for crop plants and understanding plant adaptations to salt stress is crucial for increasing agricultural productivity. Plant resilience to salinity stress is enhanced by the presence of diverse microorganisms, especially bacteria. Recent research has focused on the potential of salt-tolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) for biotechnological applications due to their metabolites. This review provides new insights into the importance of halotolerant bacteria associated with crop plants in improving plant tolerance to salinity stress. It also highlights the challenges of using HT-PGPR in agriculture and suggests potential solutions for sustainable agricultural development in the future.

Morpho-physiological, biochemical and molecular characterization of coastal rice landraces to identify novel genetic sources of salinity tolerance

Shilpha Jayabalan et al.

Summary: Soil salinity is a major factor affecting rice yield, with nearly 6% of global rice cultivable area being affected. India has a diverse range of coastal rice landraces that exhibit natural tolerance to salinity, making them a potential source for identifying new determinants of salinity tolerance. In this study, the relative salinity tolerance of 43 previously genotyped rice landraces was evaluated using various morpho-physiological and biochemical parameters. The results identified several novel genotypes with potential salinity tolerance, as well as marker trait associations and gene expression changes related to suberin biosynthesis.

Sensitivity to salinity at the emergence and seedling stages of barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli), weedy rice (Oryza sativa), and rice with different tolerances to ALS-inhibiting herbicides

Silvia Fogliatto et al.

Summary: This study found that Italian barnyardgrass showed higher tolerance to salinity compared to rice and weedy rice. Herbicide-resistant populations of barnyardgrass exhibited variable responses to salinity, with one population showing lower emergence rate and reduced seedling growth at high salt concentration, while another population showed similar response to sensitive populations.

Global predictions of primary soil salinization under changing climate in the 21st century

Amirhossein Hassani et al.

Summary: Excess salt accumulation in the root zone causes soil salinization, which affects soil health, biodiversity, and food security. The authors used machine learning algorithms to predict global soil salinization under changing climate in the 21st century, identifying hotspots in drylands such as South America, southern and western Australia, Mexico, southwest United States, and South Africa. Conversely, they project a decrease in soil salinity in northwest United States, the Horn of Africa, Eastern Europe, Turkmenistan, and west Kazakhstan in response to climate change.

Regulation of Plant Responses to Salt Stress

Shuangshuang Zhao et al.

Summary: Plants adapt to high-salt environments by regulating ion balance, activating osmotic stress pathways, mediating plant hormone signaling, and adjusting cytoskeleton dynamics and cell wall composition in response to salt stress signals. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for improving agricultural crop yields.

Short-Term Responses to Salinity of Soybean and Chenopodium album Grown in Single and Mixed-Species Hydroponic Systems

Aurora Ghirardelli et al.

Summary: Weeds like Chenopodium album L. can reduce crop yields, especially in the presence of salinity. This study found that C. album decreased soybean biomass and protein content under salt stress, while also showing better acclimation to salinity due to its ability to produce more phenolics and proline. This competitive advantage of weeds may pose a threat to soybean productivity in the long term.
