Cheap, cost-effective, and quick stress biomarkers for drought stress detection and in plants

Sergi Munne-Bosch et al.

Summary: The detection and monitoring of drought stress in plants growing in their natural habitat are crucial for studying plant stress physiology. However, it is becoming more difficult to apply simple, cost-effective methods to assess drought stress in plants, particularly in low-income countries, despite advances in plant phenotyping and new-omics technologies.

Effects of Drought Stress on Non-Structural Carbohydrates in Different Organs of Cunninghamia lanceolata

Xiaoyan Huang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the distribution of non-structural carbohydrates in different organs of Chinese fir under drought stress. It reveals that the degree and duration of drought stress significantly affect the content of fructose, glucose, sucrose, soluble sugar, starch, and total NSCs in various organs. Chinese fir exhibits different strategies in response to drought stress, allocating more soluble sugars to fine roots and increasing starch content in the needles to ensure osmosis and prevent xylem embolism.

Exogenous ?-aminobutyric acid strengthens phenylpropanoid and nitrogen metabolism to enhance the contents of flavonoids, amino acids, and the derivatives in edamame

Gaobo Yu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that GABA effectively improves the nutritional quality of edamame by accumulating amino acids, bioactive peptides, isoflavones, anthocyanins, sugars, and organic acids. Exogenous GABA increases the metabolism of endogenous GABA and enhances the activity and expression of nitrogen metabolism-related enzymes, leading to an accumulation of amino acids and bioactive peptides. Additionally, exogenous GABA induces the metabolism of flavonoids by increasing the activity and expression of flavonoid biosynthetic enzymes.

Effects of drought stress during critical periods on the photosynthetic characteristics and production performance of Naked oat (Avena nuda L.)

Xinjun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study revealed the effects of drought stress on the photosynthetic characteristics and yield of naked oats. The results showed that drought stress decreased the photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, and stomatal conductance, while affecting the chlorophyll fluorescence rate and photochemical efficiency. Additionally, drought stress led to a decrease in yield. The photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration all had significant positive relationships with the yield of naked oats. This study is significant for enhancing the production efficiency of naked oat under drought stress.

How Do Plants Respond to Combined Drought and Salinity Stress? -A Systematic Review

Prodipto Bishnu Angon et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the responses of plants to combined salinity-drought stress and found that it has a greater negative impact on plant growth, photosynthesis, ionic balance, and oxidative balance than either stress alone. The study also identified research gaps in the understanding of the interplay between salinity and drought in plants.

Monitoring the combined effects of drought and salinity stress on crops using remote sensing in the Netherlands

Wen Wen et al.

Summary: Global sustainable agricultural systems are facing threats from increasing and co-occurring drought and salinity stresses. This study used remote-sensing observations to evaluate the joint impacts of drought and salinity on crop traits and found significant effects of both stresses on functional traits of maize and potato crops, with drought having a stronger impact. The level of impact also varied depending on the stage of the growing season.

Summary: Limited information is available to support the potential role of GABA signaling in alleviating water-deficit stress in snap bean plants under semiarid conditions. This study investigates the impact of exogenous GABA application on drought stress alleviation and field performance improvements in snap bean plants subjected to different irrigation levels. Results indicate that GABA application, especially at 2 mM, partially mitigates the effects of drought stress by improving growth, water status, membrane integrity, osmotic adjustment, antioxidant defense, and nutrient acquisition, leading to increased pod yield and quality attributes.
