Use of elicitors from macroalgae and microalgae in the management of pests and diseases in agriculture

Jorge Poveda et al.

Summary: Feeding a growing population is a challenge for agriculture, and researchers are searching for ecological alternatives to reduce chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Algae, both micro- and macroalgae, have been found to contain chemical compounds that can function as biopesticides. These compounds, such as ulvans, laminarin, and alginate, can activate plant defenses against various pathogens. While macroalgae have shown potential against a wide range of pests, more research is needed to fully understand the role of microalgae as biopesticides.

Glucosinolate-extracts from residues of conventional and organic cultivated broccoli leaves (Brassica oleracea var. italica) as potential industrially-scalable efficient biopesticides against fungi, oomycetes and plant parasitic nematodes

Daniel Eugui et al.

Summary: This study aimed to standardize a protocol for obtaining a bioactive extract from broccoli crop residues that can be used on an industrial scale and effectively reduce plant disease incidence. The extracts showed biopesticidal activity against plant pathogenic fungi, but had no obvious effect on plant-parasitic nematodes.

Glucosinolates as an effective tool in plant-parasitic nematodes control: Exploiting natural plant defenses

Daniel Eugui et al.

Summary: Plant-parasitic nematodes cause serious losses to crops worldwide, and traditional control methods are limited. Plant secondary metabolites, such as glucosinolates and glucosinolate hydrolysis products, show promising nematicidal activity and are presented as a sustainable alternative for nematode control.

The flavor of Chinese kale sprouts is affected by genotypic variation of glucosinolates and their breakdown products

Wei Zeng et al.

Summary: Varieties of Chinese kale sprouts exhibit significant variations in compositions and contents of glucosinolates and their breakdown products. Gluconapin and 4,5-Epithio-pentanenitrile are identified as the dominant compounds in Chinese kale sprouts. Additionally, glucobrassicin and gluconapin are found to be significantly correlated with bitterness. BOA 1, BOA 13, BOA 3, and BOA 10 are promising candidates for future breeding programs based on their unique characteristics.

Glucosinolates in Brassica Vegetables: Characterization and Factors That Influence Distribution, Content, and Intake

Xianli Wu et al.

Summary: GSLs are sulfur-containing compounds found in the Brassica genus; Brassica vegetables are among the most commonly consumed vegetables in the world. Evidence suggests an inverse association between the consumption of Brassica vegetables and the risk of various types of cancer; the biological activities of Brassica vegetables are largely attributed to the hydrolytic products of GSLs.

Agronomic and Metabolomic Side-Effects of a Divergent Selection for Indol-3-Ylmethylglucosinolate Content in Kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala)

Jorge Poveda et al.

Summary: High and low IM content kale populations were grown and analyzed in different environments, with the high IM population showing better agronomic parameters, GSL accumulation, and metabolite concentration. This indicates that high IM kale populations may be more tolerant to diverse environmental conditions due to their GSLs and associated metabolites with potential antioxidant properties.

The Roles of Cruciferae Glucosinolates in Disease and Pest Resistance

Zeci Liu et al.

Summary: With the expansion of Cruciferae vegetable cultivation and the increase in natural threats such as pests and diseases globally, losses of Cruciferae vegetables caused by pathogens, insects, and pests are rising. Glucosinolate (GLS), a key metabolite produced by Cruciferae vegetables, serves as both an indicator of quality and a control mechanism for infestations by various fungi, bacteria, aphids, and worms. Global advocacy for safe and pollution-free vegetable production is driving research into environmentally friendly pest and disease control strategies, such as biological control, to minimize the impact of pathogens and insect pests on Cruciferae vegetables.
