Severe vitamin D deficiency in preterm infants: possibly no association with clinical outcomes?

Tomas Matejek et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to compare clinical outcomes and evaluate the risk of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in very low birth weight infants with different levels of vitamin D. The results showed that there was no significant difference in laboratory findings and clinical outcomes between infants with vitamin D levels below 25 nmol/l and above 25 nmol/l. Additionally, umbilical cord vitamin D level was not found to be associated with a higher or lower risk of RDS.

Relationship between Maternal Vitamin D Levels and Adverse Outcomes

Heng Zhang et al.

Summary: Vitamin D plays an important role in pregnancy, with low levels being associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. This review summarizes the potential mechanisms of how vitamin D regulates these outcomes and aims to provide a basis for public health intervention strategies.

Vitamin D deficiency as a predictor of poor prognosis in patients with acute respiratory failure due to COVID-19

G. E. Carpagnano et al.

Summary: This study analyzed vitamin D levels in patients with acute respiratory failure due to COVID-19 and found a high prevalence of hypovitaminosis D, with severe deficiency associated with significantly higher mortality risk. Severe vitamin D deficiency may be a marker of poor prognosis in these patients, suggesting that adjunctive treatment might improve disease outcomes.

Association of vitamin D status at birth with pulmonary disease morbidity in very preterm infants

Xuefei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels at birth and pulmonary disease morbidities in very preterm infants. The results showed a significant relationship between low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and the incidence of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). However, further research is needed to confirm this association.
