High dietary copper intake induces perturbations in the gut microbiota and affects host ovarian follicle development

Qi Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that an imbalanced gut microbiota induced by high dietary copper levels can lead to inflammation, oxidative stress, and hormonal dysregulation, ultimately affecting ovarian follicle development in PCOS. The study also suggests that Bacteroides and Staphylococcus may play mediating roles in these processes.

Gut dysbiosis in severe mental illness and chronic fatigue: a novel trans-diagnostic construct? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Jenelle Marcelle Safadi et al.

Summary: Reduced gut-microbial diversity, or gut dysbiosis, has been linked to an anhedonic/amotivational syndrome, or sickness behavior, in patients with severe mental disorders and chronic fatigue. Elevated levels of proxy biomarkers of gut dysbiosis were found in patients compared to healthy controls, and these markers were positively correlated with the severity of sickness behavior. Further research comparing trans-diagnostic and categorical approaches is necessary for potential advancement in treatment for these conditions.

Immune-microbe interactions early in life: A determinant of health and disease long term

Petter Brodin

Summary: Research on newborn immunity has shown that cell ontogeny, feto-maternal tolerance, and maternal antibody transfer are important. The role of postnatal adaptation to environmental exposures is less understood. The mutualism between the immune system and gut microbes is likely a major factor in the increasing incidence of immune-mediated disorders.

Menopause Is Associated with an Altered Gut Microbiome and Estrobolome, with Implications for Adverse Cardiometabolic Risk in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos

Brandilyn A. Peters et al.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between menopause and the gut microbiome in a large Hispanic/Latino population. The findings suggest that postmenopausal women's gut microbiome becomes more similar to that of men, potentially due to the common condition of low estrogen/progesterone levels. Menopause also leads to specific changes in the gut microbiome, including a decrease in certain gut pathogens and a decrease in hormone-related metabolic potential. These changes in the gut microbiome are associated with adverse cardiometabolic risk in postmenopausal women.

Butylated starch alleviates polycystic ovary syndrome by stimulating the secretion of peptide tyrosine-tyrosine and regulating faecal microbiota

Yufeng He et al.

Summary: Butylated starch treatment can alleviate abnormal ovarian morphology, metabolic disorders, and sex hormone imbalance in PCOS. This effect may be mediated by the activation of GPR41 and the enrichment of butyrate-producing microbes in fecal microbiota.

Gut microbiome in PCOS associates to serum metabolomics: a cross-sectional study

Zheng Yu et al.

Summary: The association between gut microbiota and serum metabolites in PCOS was investigated using untargeted metabolomics and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Differences in metabolites related to lipid metabolism and energy metabolism were observed between PCOS patients and healthy controls. The diversity of gut microbiota was lower in PCOS patients, and specific genera were correlated with metabolite concentrations. The SF-36 score, a measure of quality of life, was significantly lower in PCOS patients and associated with the presence of certain bacteria.

Summary: This study characterizes the gut bacteriome, mycobiome, and serum metabolome profiles in PCOS patients compared to normal/overweight individuals. The results show significant differences in bacterial, fungal community, and metabolite composition between PCOS patients and healthy volunteers. The predictive models based on serum metabolites show the highest accuracy in discriminating PCOS from healthy status.

Summary: The study investigated the alterations in gut microbiome and serum metabolome and their interactions in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The results revealed specific changes in microbial strains and metabolites in PCOS patients and their potential mechanisms. Integrating the multi-omics datasets allowed for the identification of a panel of strains and metabolites with high predictivity for PCOS. Additionally, fecal microbiota transplantation was shown to regulate PCOS phenotypes.

Gut microbiota alterations reveal potential gut-brain axis changes in polycystic ovary syndrome

Summary: This study aimed to identify differential gut microbial species in PCOS patients compared with age and BMI-matched healthy control women. The study found that dietary fiber and vitamin D intake were significantly decreased in PCOS, and an increase of GABA-producing species in PCOS, which correlated with serum LH levels and LH:FSH ratios. These findings suggest that gut microbial dysbiosis in women with PCOS is associated with neuroendocrine changes, indicating a potential gut-brain axis in PCOS.
