Global Burden of Ischemic Stroke in Young Adults in 204 Countries and Territories

Ruijie Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the rates of incidence, death, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of ischemic stroke in young adults aged 15-49 years and analyze the relevant risk factors. The results showed a decrease in the global rates of ischemic stroke in young adults. However, regions such as North Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia experienced the largest increases in incidence, death, and DALYs rates. High environmental temperature, high body mass index (BMI), and high fasting plasma glucose were identified as major contributors to the increasing DALYs rates. Targeted implementation of cost-effective policies and interventions is urgently needed to reduce the burden of ischemic stroke in young adults.

Summary: The study found that the prevalence and mortality rates of chronic liver disease (CLD) have increased among adolescents and young adults aged 15-29, driven primarily by non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Meanwhile, the proportion of hepatitis B virus (HBV) cases decreased across all age groups, highlighting a shift in the causes of CLD among the younger population.

Prevention of atherosclerosis from childhood

Olli Raitakari et al.

Summary: Atherosclerosis, a major cause of cardiovascular disease, begins early in life even though clinical manifestations are typically not present before middle age. Childhood exposure to risk factors, such as dyslipidaemia, elevated blood pressure, and tobacco smoking, are associated with adult preclinical atherosclerosis. However, if these risk factors are eliminated in adulthood, the long-term effects are substantially reduced. Preventive measures for atherosclerosis are often inadequate or initiated too late. Initiating prevention in early life is crucial for combating the ongoing global pandemic of atherosclerotic diseases.

Summary: Based on the data, there are differences in the burden of ischemic stroke globally and regionally among different sexes, age groups, and social development indexes. The incidence rate, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years of ischemic stroke increase with age, while the age-standardized death rate and age-standardized DALY rates increase most significantly in some regions.

Summary: This study compared pediatric and adult infective endocarditis (IE) in terms of clinical characteristics and outcomes, and found that most pediatric and adolescent IE patients had congenital heart disease (CHD), with a higher prevalence of right-sided location and a lower rate of heart failure compared to those without CHD. Pediatric and adolescent IE patients without CHD had a similar profile to IE in adults.

Summary: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally, and despite advancements in treatment, it remains highly prevalent. Prioritizing preventative measures through healthy lifestyle behaviors is necessary to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease. This review discusses the importance of adopting and assessing healthy lifestyle behaviors to mitigate cardiovascular disease.

Global, regional, and national burden of stroke and its risk factors, 1990-2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Valery L. Feigin et al.

Summary: Regularly updated data on stroke including incidence, prevalence, mortality, disability, risk factors, and trends are crucial for evidence-based care planning. The Global Burden of Diseases Study provides comprehensive measurement of these metrics. From 1990 to 2019, while age-standardized rates improved, the number of strokes and deaths increased. Low-income countries had the highest stroke-related mortality and DALY rates, with high body-mass index being the fastest-growing risk factor.

Ischaemic heart disease, stroke, and their cardiometabolic risk factors in Africa: current challenges and outlook for the future

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of death in Sub-Saharan Africa, but prevention and effective treatments are not widely available. The burden of diseases like ischemic heart disease and stroke, driven by risk factors like obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidaemia, is rising rapidly in the region. However, prevention and control efforts are currently disorganized and insufficient, with barriers at multiple levels hindering optimal care for CVD risk factors.
