Barriers and facilitators for shared decision making in older patients with multiple chronic conditions: a systematic review

Ruth E. Pel-Littel et al.

Summary: Elderly patients with multiple chronic conditions participate less in shared decision making due to poor health and impairments, with healthcare professionals' interpersonal skills and organizational barriers also hindering the process. However, sharing personal values, decision support from informal caregivers, and care coordination can facilitate shared decision making.

Shared decision making in Australian physiotherapy practice: A survey of knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported use

Tammy Hoffmann et al.

Summary: This study assessed Australian physiotherapists' knowledge about, attitudes towards, and self-reported use of shared decision making, as well as perceived barriers to its implementation in practice. The physiotherapists showed a generally positive attitude towards shared decision making, with a willingness to learn more about it, while facing barriers such as patient knowledge and confidence, consequent fewer physiotherapy sessions, and time constraints. Opportunities for providing skills training in shared decision making should be explored to address these barriers and ensure effective implementation.
