Acute psychiatric care: approaches to increasing the range of services and improving access and quality of care

Sonia Johnson et al.

Summary: Acute services for mental health crises are crucial, but the evidence on the best models and approaches is limited. Innovative models and strategies are potentially helpful, but there is a lack of evidence on initial assessment and immediate management. Acute wards continue to be important, but new approaches are needed to reduce coercion and improve collaboration. Community crisis services and voluntary sector approaches have supporting evidence in diverting some service users from hospital admission.
