Identification of genomic regions associated with total and progressive sperm motility in Italian Holstein bulls

J. Ramirez-Diaz et al.

Summary: Sperm motility is a complex trait influenced by environmental and genetic factors, and is associated with male fertility, oocyte penetration rate, and reproductive success in cattle. A GWAS study was conducted in Italian Holstein bulls to identify candidate regions and genes associated with variations in progressive and total motility. The results identified several genomic regions and genes related to energy homeostasis, membrane functions, sperm-egg interactions, protection against oxidative stress, olfactory receptors, and immune system. These findings contribute to our understanding of the genetic control of sperm motility and may help improve reproductive success.

Multi-breed genomic predictions and functional variants for fertility of tropical bulls

Laercio R. Porto-Neto et al.

Summary: Worldwide, the identification and selection of fertile bulls plays a crucial role in beef production. In this study, fertility-related phenotypes and high-density DNA genotypes were collected for thousands of bulls from six tropical breeds, revealing both genetic correlations and the importance of breed representation for accurate genomic estimated breeding values. Several candidate genes associated with bull fertility traits were identified, contributing to early-life selection and genetic improvement strategies. This study also enhances our knowledge of the molecular basis of male fertility in mammals.

Genome-wide association study of beef bull semen attributes

M. L. Butler et al.

Summary: This study conducted a single-step genome-wide association study (ssGWAS) to analyze the genetic basis of beef bull semen attributes. The results revealed several significant SNP near or within quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with beef bull semen attributes. In addition, genes associated with fertility were found to contain or be near the significant SNP identified in this study. The findings indicate that there are specific regions in the genome that impact fertility, and incorporating genomic information into genetic evaluation could be beneficial for improving male fertility traits.

A systematic review and meta-analyses of interleukin-1 receptor associated kinase 3 (IRAK3) action on inflammation in in vivo models for the study of sepsis

Trang H. Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analyses to investigate the expression and effects of interleukin-1 receptor associated kinase 3 (IRAK3) on inflammatory markers. The results showed a negative correlation between IRAK3 and TNF-alpha expression in the immunosuppression phase of sepsis. Furthermore, species differences and variations in experimental procedures influenced the reliability of the results.

Mitochondrial Functionality in Male Fertility: From Spermatogenesis to Fertilization

Yoo-Jin Park et al.

Summary: Mitochondria play crucial roles in male fertility by providing energy, regulating sperm development and acidity, and participating in testosterone production. Male infertility is mainly associated with the loss of mitochondrial proteins, leading to reduced sperm motility and infertility.

Autosomal recessive loci contribute significantly to quantitative variation of male fertility in a dairy cattle population

Maya Hiltpold et al.

Summary: The study identified novel recessive QTL for male fertility in Brown Swiss cattle, with one QTL associated with sperm head shape anomalies. Fine-mapping approaches and whole-genome sequencing revealed candidate causal variants linked to these QTL, suggesting that non-coding variants may play a significant role in bull fertility variation.
