State of the Art MR Imaging for Lung Cancer TNM Stage Evaluation

Yoshiharu Ohno et al.

Summary: Technical advancements in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging have made it possible to use it as a diagnostic tool for thoracic malignancies, providing both morphological and functional information. According to the recommendation from the Fleischner Society in 2020, MR imaging can be used for the diagnosis of lung diseases. This review focuses on the application of MR imaging in lung cancer, pulmonary nodules, and masses.

Oligo-Metastatic Cancers: Putative Biomarkers, Emerging Challenges and New Perspectives

Alessandro Ottaiano et al.

Summary: Oligometastatic disease is a condition in which cancer spreads to only a few distant sites, and it is associated with a more favorable prognosis compared to polymetastatic disease. Recent studies have identified specific molecular and genetic features that underlie the oligometastatic phenotype, suggesting the potential for personalized therapies. This scoping review highlights new clinical, biological, and methodological challenges in understanding and treating oligometastatic disease.

Colorectal Cancer Preoperative Evaluation and Staging

Najjia N. Mahmoud

Summary: Colorectal tumor staging has undergone some changes over time, but not significantly. In the past 10 years, advancements in our understanding of tumor genetics and the use of MRI technology for rectal cancer staging have altered the way we assess colon and rectal cancers. Currently, CT scanning, a thorough history and physical examination, and colonoscopic assessment are still the mainstays of staging. Successful staging of colorectal cancer requires coordination and cooperation between surgery, gastroenterology, medical oncology, pathology, and radiology.

Characterization of KRAS Mutational Regression in Oligometastatic Patients

Alessandro Ottaiano et al.

Summary: This study found that the oligometastatic status is a significant and independent prognostic factor in colorectal cancer patients. Some patients exhibited genetic regression of KRAS and showed differential cytotoxicity against colon cancer cells carrying different KRAS mutations.

Tumour Burden Reporting in Phase III Clinical Trials of Metastatic Lung, Breast, and Colorectal Cancers: A Systematic Review

Mariachiara Santorsola et al.

Summary: The study highlighted the importance of better assessment of initial tumour burden in clinical trials, as well as the need for more attention to low-burden metastatic disease as a stratification factor. Only a small percentage of studies included low-burden disease as a stratification for randomisation, and significant imbalances between arms in patients with low-burden disease were revealed in two studies.

KRAS Mutational Regression Is Associated With Oligo-Metastatic Status and Good Prognosis in Metastatic Colorectal Cancer

Alessandro Ottaiano et al.

Summary: Our study demonstrates that the evolutionary trajectories of KRAS play a significant clinical prognostic role in CRC patients and can help differentiate between poly-metastatic aggressive and oligo-metastatic indolent CRC.

Genetic regressive trajectories in colorectal cancer: A new hallmark of oligo-metastatic disease?

Alessandro Ottaiano et al.

Summary: Colorectal cancer originates from multiple genetic alterations, with some genes extensively studied. Approximately 10% of metastatic CRC patients present with indolent oligo-metastatic disease, highlighting the importance of studying the genetic dynamics between oligo- and poly-metastatic diseases for therapeutic strategies.
