Lab-in-a-Cup (LiC): An autonomous fluidic device for daily urinalysis using smartphone

M. Mahabubur Rahman et al.

Summary: Urine analysis is a noninvasive method suitable for routine health screening due to the wide range of biomarkers found in urine. A lab-in-a-Cup (LiC) hybrid urinalyzer has been developed using a disposable plastic cup and conventional paper-based urine sensors, enabling stable and reproducible measurements. A smartphone application with image recognition algorithm automates the analysis procedures, eliminating the reliance on manual color scheme. The LiC device can be applied as a near-patient urinalyzer, significantly improving reaction time and sample volume-dependent irregularities for colorimetric assessment of urine sensors.

Estimating the population variance, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation: Sample size and accuracy

Michael A. Schillaci et al.

Summary: Small sample sizes are commonly used in human and primate evolutionary research to estimate population parameters. This study presents methods for determining the probability that sample estimates accurately represent population parameters, based on Cochran's theorem. The results indicate that larger random samples are needed to accurately estimate population variance, while smaller sample sizes are sufficient for estimating population standard deviation. The study also shows that the coefficient of variation closely mirrors the results for the standard deviation.

Quantifying asymptomatic infection and transmission of COVID-19 in New York City using observed cases, serology, and testing capacity

Rahul Subramanian et al.

Summary: The study suggests that asymptomatic infections play a significant role in the spread and resurgence of COVID-19, even though it is challenging to accurately estimate their contributions due to changes in testing capacity. Even if asymptomatic infections have lower transmission rates, they still comprise a substantial portion of the force of infection along with presymptomatic cases.

Association of SARS-CoV-2 Seropositive Antibody Test With Risk of Future Infection

Raymond A. Harvey et al.

Summary: Understanding the impact of serum antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 on infection susceptibility is crucial for identifying at-risk populations and vaccine deployment. Results of the study suggest that individuals with positive antibody test results initially had a higher likelihood of positive NAAT results, but this likelihood decreased significantly over time, indicating that seropositivity may be associated with protection from infection, though the duration of this protection remains uncertain and may decrease over time.
