Antibiotic removal and antibiotic resistance genes fate by regulating bioelectrochemical characteristics in microbial fuel cells

Xiao-Li Yang et al.

Summary: Bioelectrochemical characteristics play a critical role in antibiotics removal and ARGs control in microbial fuel cell (MFC). The current intensity has a stronger effect on the system than the anode potential. Appropriate regulation of bio-electrochemical characteristics is essential for improving electricity generation and controlling ARGs.

Enhanced nutrient removal from mixed black water by a microbial ultra-low weak electrical stimulated anaerobic-two stage anoxic/aerobic process

Song Qin et al.

Summary: This study achieved efficient removal of nutrients from mixed black water by using a combination of microbial fuel cells and microbial electrolytic cells in an anaerobic-two stage anoxic/aerobic system. The use of microbial ultra-low weak electrical stimulation resulted in high removal rates of total nitrogen and total phosphorus.

Enhancement of nitrogen removal and energy recovery from low C/N ratio sewage by multi-electrode electrochemical technology and tidal flow via siphon aeration

Ke Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, electrochemical technology and tidal flow method were used to enhance the denitrification process in low C/N ratio wastewater. Constructed wetland and microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) reactor with dewatered alum sludge (DAS) as substrate were also constructed to improve phosphorus removal efficiency. The results showed that TF CW-MFC had high removal efficiency for COD and TN, and could effectively reduce methane emissions. The technology has potential application value in green wastewater treatment.

Effect of fungal pellets on denitrifying bacteria at low carbon to nitrogen ratio: Nitrate removal, extracellular polymeric substances, and potential functions

Yi Sun et al.

Summary: This research aims to investigate the effect of fungal pellets (FP) on denitrifying bacteria in terms of nitrate removal, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and potential functions under a low carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio. The study found that the interaction between FP and denitrifying bacteria promoted the production of polysaccharides (PS) and improved the metabolic capability of the bacteria.

Effect of lignite activated coke packing on power generation and phenol degradation in microbial fuel cell treating high strength phenolic wastewater

Jing Shen et al.

Summary: This study successfully alleviated the inhibition of high concentration phenol on MFC by incorporating lignite activated coke (LAC), resulting in enhanced power generation and phenol degradation efficiency. High-throughput sequencing analysis indicated that Pseudomonas, Desulfuromonas, and Hydrogenophaga might play important roles in phenol degradation and power generation in LAC-MFC. The use of LAC packing is a promising technology for high strength phenolic wastewater treatment due to its effectiveness in relieving the toxic effects of phenol.

Investigation of critical sludge characteristics for membrane fouling in a submerged membrane bioreactor: Role of soluble microbial products and extracted extracellular polymeric substances

Yongsun Jang et al.

Summary: Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are considered a promising tool for resource recovery in wastewater treatment, however, membrane fouling is inevitable and deteriorates MBR performance. This study found that an increase in total soluble microbial product (SMP) and extracted extracellular polymeric substance (eEPS) concentration leads to early TMP jumps and low fouling rates.

Mechanistic insights into the effects of biopolymer conversion on macroscopic physical properties of waste activated sludge during hydrothermal treatment: Importance of the Maillard reaction

Qiandi Wang et al.

Summary: The molecular transformation of sludge biopolymers during hydrothermal treatment significantly affects the macrophysical properties of sludge. The deterioration of sludge dewaterability and rheological properties at lower temperatures is attributed to the release of a biopolymer with a gel-like network structure into the liquid phase. However, above a certain temperature threshold, the degradation of the biopolymer network structure leads to an improvement in sludge dewaterability.
