Succession of microbial communities reveals the inevitability of anammox core in the development of anammox processes

Qi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that the introduction of different sludge communities as seeds has a significant impact on the growth of anammox bacteria, and sludge communities dominated by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria are the closest to the anammox core and achieve the highest nitrogen removal efficiency. The results of this study provide a solution to the shortage of anammox seeds in full-scale wastewater treatment applications.

Prokaryotic community interchange between distinct microhabitats causes community pressure on anammox biofilm development

Weiwei Cai et al.

Summary: Biofilms are an efficient way of wastewater treatment, but little is known about their formation and development in industrial settings. The interplay between different microhabitats is important for sustaining biofilm formation. SourceTracker analysis showed that the majority of initial biofilm originated from the aggregate, but independent evolution was led by anammox species later on. The microbial interaction pattern and community variation displayed similar trends, but the unknown source proportion of interaction was high throughout the incubation, suggesting different relationships within the distinct microhabitats.

Feasibility of partial-denitrification/anammox for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment in a hybrid biofilm reactor

Jingwen Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposed and demonstrated a novel approach integrating partial-denitrification with anaerobic ammonia oxidation for efficient biological nitrogen removal from high-strength pharmaceutical wastewater. The PD/A biofilm showed high tolerance and adaptation to pharmaceutical wastewater, achieving a stable TN removal efficiency. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed important bacterial communities contributing to high NO2- -N accumulation in the system. Overall, this new method offers a satisfactory efficiency for high-strength pharmaceutical wastewater treatment with low energy consumption and operation cost.

Long-term effect of perfluorooctanoic acid on the anammox system based on metagenomics: Performance, sludge characteristic and microbial community dynamic

Linqin Tang et al.

Summary: The effects of PFOA on the nitrogen removal performance, microbial community, and functional genes in an ABR were investigated. The results showed that increasing PFOA concentration decreased the removal efficiencies of NH4+-N and NO2--N, as well as the relative abundance of specific microbial species and the expression of anammox genes in the sludge.

Metagenomic insights into the symbiotic relationship in anammox consortia at reduced temperature

Tao Ya et al.

Summary: This study found that reducing the temperature promoted the production of larger granular sludge in a laboratory-scale anammox reactor. The researchers also discovered potential interactions between AnAOB and heterotrophic bacteria through network analysis and metagenomics. These interactions help maintain the stability of the anammox reactor.

Underpinning unique genes in Ca. Brocadia sp. and its interspecies association potentials in a partial nitrification/anammox system with low-strength wastewater

Xiaoming Ji et al.

Summary: Incorporating anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) with anaerobic treatment of sewage provides an energy-efficient option for nitrogen removal. Through enriching and operating a PN-Anammox fluidized-bed bioreactor with granular activated carbon, significant total nitrogen removal was achieved. The enriched anammox strain Ca. Brocadia sp. showed potential for flexible nitrogen removal through organic utilization, supported by meta-omics analyses.

Summary: This study experimentally resolved the central carbon metabolism of the anammox bacterium 'Kuenenia stuttgartiensis', confirming predicted metabolic pathways and revealing instances where genomic predictions did not align with in vivo metabolic fluxes. The findings provide a foundation for understanding the carbon metabolism of anammox bacteria at a systems-level and inform future studies on factors governing their function and niche differentiation in ecosystems.

Insight into the evolution of microbial community and antibiotic resistance genes in anammox process induced by copper after recovery from oxytetracycline stress

Qian-Qian Zhang et al.

Summary: The experimental results show that the stress on Anammox performance caused by Cu2+ is reversible, and the inhibition can be slowed down by the combination of OTM and Cu2+. The positive relation between dominant bacteria and abundance of functional genes implies that the recovery of performance is due to the gradual domestication of latent resistant species.

Highly enriched anammox within anoxic biofilms by reducing suspended sludge biomass in a real-sewage A2/O process

Jianwei Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel strategy for stably enriching anammox in mainstream by utilizing competitive differences between anoxic biofilms and suspended sludge. Experimental results showed that anammox was significantly more abundant in anoxic-carrier biofilms compared to suspended sludge, and batch tests confirmed the effectiveness of anammox for nitrogen removal. Overall, this study demonstrates a promising and practical alternative for enriching anammox bacteria in municipal wastewater treatment plants.
