Alkaline deacetylation-aided hydrogen peroxide-acetic acid pretreatment of bamboo residue to improve enzymatic saccharification and bioethanol production

Fanyang Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the bamboo pretreatment with alkaline deacetylation-aided hydrogen peroxide-acetic acid (HPAC-NaOH) for producing high-value-added products. The results showed that the posttreatment of alkaline deacetylation significantly increased glucose yield and ethanol concentrations by 20-27%. There was a strong negative correlation between the content of acetyl and cellulose accessibility and enzymatic hydrolysis yield. The deacetylation process improved cellulase adsorption capacities and the variations of hydrophilicity, cellulose crystallinity, and degree of polymerization, which enhanced the bioconversion of bamboo to biofuels.

Ibrahim Alper Basar et al.

Summary: In this study, an environmentally friendly version of hydrogen peroxide - acetic acid (HPAC) pretreatment was developed and optimized for maximum bio-fuel production and cost optimization. Experimental design using central composite design and response surface method revealed that significant ethanol production enhancement was observed at 100 degrees C. The optimal conditions for maximum ethanol production were found to be 2% H2O2, 0% HAc, 24 h, and 100 degrees C, while maximum methane production was observed at 2% HAc, 0% H2O2, 100 degrees C, and 6 h. Additionally, the cost-optimal pretreatment conditions were identified as 1.87% HAc, 0% H2O2, 50 degrees C, and 6 h with 67.5% energy recovery.

Role of peracetic acid on the disruption of lignin packing structure and its consequence on lignin depolymerisation

Ruoshui Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the oxidative depolymerisation mechanism of lignin by PAA, revealing that PAA initiates oxygen insertion to the lignin macromolecule resulting in disruption of its packing structures and facilitates depolymerisation. The predominant reaction pathway for the oxidative depolymerisation of lignin with PAA was found to be the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation. The research also explored various metal oxide and mixed metal oxide catalysts to enhance the efficiency of PAA-mediated depolymerisation of lignin.
