Carbamazepine improves hydrogen production from anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge

Xianli Yang et al.

Summary: The widespread use of pharmaceuticals has raised concerns about their potential environmental effects. Previous studies have shown that most of the pharmaceuticals investigated had harmful effects on wastewater or sludge treatment. However, this study found that carbamazepine at environmentally relevant levels increased hydrogen production from anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge.

Amino Acid Configuration Affects Volatile Fatty Acid Production during Proteinaceous Waste Valorization: Chemotaxis, Quorum Sensing, and Metabolism

Meng Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that during the production of VFAs from proteinaceous wastes, D-AAs are more likely to remain than L-AAs, and VFAs produced from D-AAs are lower. L-AAs exhibit greater bacterial chemotaxis and quorum sensing, which benefits the establishment of functional microorganisms and expression of functional proteins.

Evaluating the effect of diclofenac on hydrogen production by anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge

Jingnan Yang et al.

Summary: Hydrogen production from waste-activated sludge anaerobic fermentation is an effective method of resource recovery. However, the presence of diclofenac, a widely used anti-inflammatory drug, inhibits hydrogen production by binding to the active sites of hydrogenase, which leads to the inhibition of acetogenesis and acidogenesis processes that are responsible for hydrogen production.

A review on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons distribution in freshwater ecosystems and their toxicity to benthic fauna

Fatima Jesus et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are hazardous pollutants that are widely present in the environment and can accumulate in sediment, posing a threat to benthic communities in freshwater environments. This review provides an overview of the distribution of PAHs in freshwater environments and their toxicity to benthic fauna, and highlights the need for further research on the environmental toxicity of PAHs in combination with other stressors.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons stimulate acidogenesis, acetogenesis and methanogenesis during anaerobic co-digestion of waste activated sludge and food waste

Yinguang Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the anaerobic co-digestion of waste activated sludge and food waste. The study found that four different PAHs, especially phenanthrene, had positive contributions to methane production. Mechanism exploration revealed improvements in acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis in the presence of phenanthrene, with the most significant improvement seen in acetotrophic methanogenesis.

Jingyang Luo et al.

Summary: This study found that utilizing cellulase can effectively enhance the co-fermentation efficiency of waste activated sludge and paper waste, increasing the production of volatile fatty acids. The presence of cellulase promotes the concentration of soluble bioavailable substrates, enriches functional anaerobes and microbial activities related to VFAs biosynthesis, ultimately promoting the generation of VFAs.

Remediation of soils and sediments polluted with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: To immobilize, mobilize, or degrade?

Manish Kumar et al.

Summary: PAHs are generated due to incomplete burning of organic substances, primarily influenced by the use of fossil fuels. They impose health impacts on humans and other living organisms due to their carcinogenic, mutagenic, or teratogenic properties. Their high hydrophobicity and low water solubility influence their adsorption onto soils and sediments, affecting their bioavailability and subsequent degradation.
