Towards advanced nutrient removal by microalgae-bacteria symbiosis system for wastewater treatment

Mingxiang Qv et al.

Summary: In this study, a microalgae-bacteria symbiosis (ABS) system was developed for pollutants removal by co-culturing Chlorella sorokiniana with activated sludge, and the interaction mechanism was investigated. The ABS system achieved almost complete removal of ammonia nitrogen, with removal efficiencies of 65.3% for total nitrogen and 42.6% for total phosphorus. Brevundimonas greatly promoted microalgal biomass growth and microalgae contributed to the increase in the abundance of Dokdonella and Thermomonas, facilitating nitrogen removal. The study also identified key extracellular polymeric substances for the formation of flocs by microalgae and activated sludge.

Insights into nitrogen and phosphorus metabolic mechanisms of algal-bacterial aerobic granular sludge via metagenomics: Performance, microbial community and functional genes

Wei Xiong et al.

Summary: Metagenomic analysis was used to propose the potential mechanism for the enhancement of nitrogen and phosphorus removal in algal-bacterial aerobic granular sludge (A-AGS). The results showed high removal rates for chemical oxygen demand, ammonia nitrogen, total N, and total P in A-AGS. The enrichment of extracellular polymeric substances by algae promoted the formation of A-AGS. Functional gene analysis indicated enhanced nitrification, denitrification, and polyphosphate accumulation in A-AGS, with the dominant source of functional genes being the genus Thauera. The synergistic effect between bacteria and microalgae contributed to the improved N and P removal performance, showing potential for wastewater treatment applications.

Chlorella vulgaris cultivation in pilot-scale to treat real swine wastewater and mitigate carbon dioxide for sustainable biodiesel production by direct enzymatic transesterification

Dian Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigated the treatment of real swine wastewater using indigenous Chlorella vulgaris MBFJNU-1 and the production of sustainable biodiesel through direct enzymatic transesterification of the resulting lipids from the wet biomass. The results showed that C. vulgaris MBFJNU-1 achieved higher microalgal biomass, fatty acids content, CO2 biofixation, lipid productivities, and nutrients removal compared to the control group. Enzymatic transesterification of wet disrupted Chlorella biomass with lipase TL and phospholipase PLA resulted in high biodiesel conversion rates.

CO2 improves the microalgal-bacterial granular sludge towards carbon-negative wastewater treatment

Bin Ji et al.

Summary: In this study, it was demonstrated that CO2 can effectively enhance the physical structure and stability of microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS), improve the removal efficiency of organics and phosphorus, and provide additional carbon source and buffering capacity for the MBGS system in wastewater treatment. Furthermore, CO2 supply could potentially lead to a carbon-negative objective and eliminate carbon emissions, making it a promising strategy for environment-sustainable wastewater treatment.

Sodium acetate promotes the production of biomass and intracellular biochemical components by Micractinium reisseri FM1 under batch and fed-batch cultivation

Yueqin Cao et al.

Summary: Carbon source supply and feeding mode have important effects on the growth and metabolite accumulation of microalgae. This study found that the addition of acetate and fed-batch feeding mode can significantly increase the biomass and lipid production of Microactinium reisseri FM1. Different cultivation modes did not have a significant effect on the composition of fatty acids, but a higher proportion of saturated fatty acids was obtained when acetate was supplied in mixotrophic medium.

Algogenic organic matter fouling alleviation in membrane distillation by peroxymonosulfate (PMS): Role of PMS concentration and activation temperature

Muhammad Bilal Asif et al.

Summary: Membrane distillation (MD) has been a focus of research, but membrane fouling remains a challenge. This study compared the performance of standalone direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) with integrated peroxymonosulfate (PMS)/DCMD for treating surface water with algogenic organic matter (AOM), finding that the removal of conductivity and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was similar between the two methods. However, membrane fouling significantly reduced the permeate flux in the standalone DCMD. By pre-treating at 60 degrees C and using an optimum PMS concentration of 10 mM, membrane fouling could be effectively mitigated.
