Optimization of softwood pretreatment by microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvents at high solids loading

Regan Ceaser et al.

Summary: Microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvent (DES) has been found to be an effective method for lignocellulose fractionation. In this study, the improvement of milled softwood mixture (MSM) fractionation using chlorine chloride-formic acid (ChCl:FA) was investigated, achieving high removal of hemicellulose and lignin while retaining glucan. The microwave assisted ChCl:FA pretreatment showed promising results in obtaining high quality glucan and lignin at high solid loading.

Approach to an efficient pretreatment method for rice straw by deep eutectic solvent for high saccharification efficiency

Premeshworii Devi Maibam et al.

Summary: In this study, a deep eutectic solvent comprising choline chloride and acetic acid was used for the pretreatment of rice straw. The optimized conditions for pretreatment were determined using a central composite design approach. The pretreated rice straw showed higher cellulose content and crystallinity index, and exhibited a porous surface. Saccharification of the pretreated rice straw using commercial cellulase resulted in high saccharification efficiency.

Deconstructing sugarcane bagasse lignocellulose by acid-based deep eutectic solvents to enhance enzymatic digestibility

Maria Guadalupe Moran-Aguilar et al.

Summary: Biorefinery with deep eutectic solvent (DES) is an emerging processing technology that can overcome the limitations of conventional biomass pretreatments. This study evaluates the biorefinery of sugarcane bagasse (SCB) using DES formulated with choline chloride as hydrogen bond acceptor and three hydrogen bond donors: lactic acid, citric acid, and acetic acid. It was found that acetic acid has unique ionic properties that contribute to the selective removal of lignin and the deconstruction of cellulose, resulting in enhanced digestibility during enzymatic hydrolysis.

Combination of ultrasonication and deep eutectic solvent in pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass for enhanced enzymatic saccharification

Kiat Moon Lee et al.

Summary: The synergistic effect of ultrasonication with deep eutectic solvent (DES) on pretreatment of oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) has proven to significantly enhance the process, with Choline chloride:lactic acid (ChCl:LA) leading to the highest yield of reducing sugars and the lowest crystallinity and lignin content, possibly due to its intrinsic properties of low viscosity and low surface tension. The incorporation of ultrasonication in DES pretreatment resulted in a significant increase in reducing sugars yield, highlighting the promising potential of ultrasound-assisted DES pretreatment as an alternative technique for lignocellulosic biomass.

Summary: The study found that alkaline deep eutectic solvents (ADESs) can effectively separate hemicelluloses from woody biomass, with choline chloride-monoethanolamine (C-M) being the most effective solvent. Different ADESs can extract hemicelluloses with varying degrees of branching, and significantly enhance the enzymatic digestibility of cellulose.
