Optimization of enzymatic hydrolysis conditions of chemical pretreated cotton stalk using response surface methodology for enhanced bioethanol production yield

Oznur Yildirim et al.

Summary: This study investigated various pretreatment methods to enhance the biofuel potential of lignocellulosic biomass, and found that acid pretreatment had the highest effect in obtaining reducing sugar. Using the response surface methodology, the optimal conditions for enzymatic hydrolysis were determined as 40 FPU/g biomass, 65-hour retention time, and 45 degrees C temperature. The highest total reducing sugar yield was 30 g fermentable sugar/L or 0.36 g sugar/g biomass, with a bioethanol concentration of 9.5 g/L.

Mild organosolv pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse with acetone/phenoxyethanol/water for enhanced sugar production

Wuhuan Li et al.

Summary: This study utilized acetone/phenoxyethanol/water (APW) solutions to pretreat sugarcane bagasse and improve sugar production in enzymatic hydrolysis. The optimal pretreatment conditions were determined to be 125 degrees C-120 min, 0.17 M H2SO4, and a liquid-solid ratio of 15, resulting in high lignin removal and cellulose digestibility. The APW process also showed effective fractionation of other biomass feedstocks, such as pine, corn stalk, and bamboo.

Pretreatment of poplar with eco-friendly levulinic acid to achieve efficient utilization of biomass

Jiao Li et al.

Summary: Organic acid pretreatment is an effective method for separating lignocellulosic biomass, but lignin repolymerization hinders the process. A new organic acid pretreatment using levulinic acid was studied to overcome this issue. Optimal conditions for hemicellulose separation were determined at a levulinic acid concentration of 7.0%, temperature of 170 degrees C, and time of 100 minutes. The use of levulinic acid led to a significant increase in hemicellulose separation compared to acetic acid pretreatment, attributed to the inhibitory effect of gamma-valerolactone on lignin repolymerization.

Optimization of lignin extraction from bamboo by ultrasound-assisted organosolv pretreatment

Anindita Das et al.

Summary: In order to achieve a sustainable biorefinery, reducing the recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass is crucial. This study investigated an integrated pretreatment method to recover high-quality lignin and cellulose-rich pulp. Optimization studies showed that ultrasound treatment combined with organosolv pretreatment resulted in high lignin yield and purity. Ultrasound treatment enhanced delignification and increased cellulose crystallinity, maintaining the quality of lignin. The extracted lignin contained a significant amount of β-O-4 linkages, which is favorable for downstream valorization.

Steam Explosion Pretreatment with Different Concentrations of Hydrogen Peroxide along with Citric Acid: A Former Step towards Bioethanol Production

Akanksha Shukla et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the steam explosion method for efficient pretreatment of rice straw for bioethanol production. After pretreatment, the cellulose content increased to 54.5% while the hemicellulose and lignin content decreased to 46.5% and 6.7%, respectively. The combination of H2O2 and citric acid at a 1:1 ratio showed enhanced cellulose accessibility.
