Applications of artificial intelligence in anaerobic co-digestion: Recent advances and prospects

Muzammil Khan et al.

Summary: Anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) offers various advantages in terms of better digestibility, process stability, and increased methane yield. However, the efficient operation of an AcoD system requires a comprehensive understanding of important operational parameters and monitoring processes can be tedious. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as an innovative approach to optimize and control the AcoD process. This review discusses the applications of AI in AcoD process optimization, control, prediction, and real-time monitoring, as well as the comparison of different AI algorithms.

Comparison of machine learning methods for predicting the methane production from anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic biomass

Zhengxin Wang et al.

Summary: This study aims to propose an appropriate data-driven model for the efficient prediction of specific methane yield (SMY) using data from 277 samples of various lignocellulosic biomass materials by evaluating ten different machine learning (ML) methods. The results show that chemical components are more relevant as attributes for the ML models compared to element compositions, and the content of lignin has a strong linear correlation with SMY. Nonlinear classic ML methods (R2 >= 0.61) perform better than linear methods (R2 <= 0.56), and an ensemble learning model (R2 = 0.71) is better than a single learner (R2 <= 0.67).

Boosting biogas production from recalcitrant lignin-based feedstock by adding lignin-derived carbonaceous materials within the anaerobic digestion process

Chen Deng et al.

Summary: Lignocellulosic biomass can contribute to biogas production, but the recalcitrant structure of lignin hinders its biodegradation. Direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) can enhance the degradation of lignin derivatives. In a circular bioeconomy system, lignin-derived biochar and activated carbon were found to improve the digestion of syringaldehyde, a typical lignin monomer. Biochar reduced the lag-phase time by 33-42% through enhanced syntrophic hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis, while activated carbon decreased the lag-phase time by 46-85% and promoted the degradation of volatile fatty acids by combining enhanced syntrophic oxidation and DIET. The highest biomethane yield was achieved when activated carbon was added at a dosage of 20 g/L, increasing by 33% compared to syringaldehyde digestion alone.
