Microbial community and carbon-nitrogen metabolism pathways in integrated vertical flow constructed wetlands treating wastewater containing antibiotics

Miaowen Qu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the effects of sulfamethoxazole on carbon-nitrogen transformation and microbial community in constructed wetlands. The results show that sulfamethoxazole can be co-metabolized with organic pollutants, resulting in a high removal rate. Additionally, sulfamethoxazole promotes the enrichment of co-metabolizing bacteria and functional genes involved in denitrification, leading to an increase in denitrification rate.

Antimicrobial peptide antibiotics inhibit aerobic denitrification via affecting electron transportation and remolding carbon metabolism

Na Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of polymyxin B (PMB) on aerobic denitrification performance. The results showed that PMB decreased nitrate removal efficiency and drove denitrifiers to transform more nitrate to biomass instead of producing gas-N. PMB also damaged bacterial membrane and suppressed key enzymes participating in denitrification and aerobic respiratory chains. In addition, denitrifiers exhibited different preferences for carbon sources in the presence of PMB.

Determination of the lower limits of antibiotic biodegradation and the fate of antibiotic resistant genes in activated sludge: Both nitrifying bacteria and heterotrophic bacteria matter

Ruofan Yan et al.

Summary: The study found that different microorganisms have different contributions to the biodegradation pathways of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and the removal of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs). Heterotrophic bacteria play a significant role in SMX degradation, while ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) have a greater contribution to SMX removal through co-metabolism.

Sulfamethoxazole removal from mariculture wastewater in moving bed biofilm reactor and insight into the changes of antibiotic and resistance genes

Yue Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the A/O-MBBR was used to treat mariculture wastewater containing SMX, and it was found that the bioreactor could remove a portion of SMX, with most of it being biodegraded in the anoxic tank. The study also showed that SMX enriched SMX-related ARGs and enhanced their expression. This suggests the need for further control of antibiotics residue and resistance genes during mariculture wastewater treatment.

Zhao Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal profiles of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during urine nitritation. The results showed that sulfamethoxazole and roxithromycin were effectively eliminated, while trimethoprim and chloramphenicol had low removal efficiency. Ammonia oxidation bacteria and heterotrophic bacteria played important roles in sulfamethoxazole degradation.

Summary: This study revealed that ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) are the main contributors to antibiotic degradation in nitrifying sludge systems, while heterotrophic bacteria also play a significant role, especially at higher concentrations. The inhibition of AOB at high concentrations and the involvement of heterotrophic bacteria in antibiotic degradation were confirmed through molecular and enzyme analysis, shedding new light on the complex mechanisms of antibiotic removal in nitrifying sludge systems.

Molecular Insight into the Binding Property and Mechanism of Sulfamethoxazole to Extracellular Proteins of Anammox Sludge

Gui-Feng Li et al.

Summary: Antibiotics, such as sulfamethoxazole, can interact with extracellular proteins of anammox sludge, leading to fluorescence quenching and structural changes. The binding process is enthalpy-driven, and the aromatic proteins show the strongest quenching effect. Molecular simulations suggest that sulfamethoxazole can disrupt the structure of extracellular proteins through hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions.

Understanding of the mechanism of extracellular polymeric substances of aerobic granular sludge against tetracycline from the perspective of fluorescence properties

Zhengwen Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the resistance mechanism of AGS-EPS against tetracycline, showing that tetracycline interacted with proteins and humic acid in AGS-EPS by forming stable complexes. Components with larger molecular weight in AGS-EPS interacted with tetracycline prior to those with smaller molecular weight, and tetracycline had the potential to bind with divalent cations in AGS-EPS, causing conformation changes of proteins.

Summary: In this study, aerobic granular sludge (AGS) was used to treat tetracycline (TC) from swine wastewater, showing that the removal of TC by AGS was mainly due to adsorption and biodegradation, and the contribution rate of biodegradation increased after AGS adaptation to TC. Twenty-two by-products were detected during biodegradation of TC, and the degradation pathway of TC was speculated.
